Hi,
Am fairly ignorant about herp husbandry but I have a young EDB that I am holding for a venom research facility. He (she?) was captured 13 days ago and is being kept absolutely secluded and in dark quarters. He seems to be very settled down since the time of initial capture. I know these critters don't eat all that often but he will be in my custody for probably another week and a half. Don't think he had eaten prior to the capture. No lumps or evidence of a recent meal and he hasn't taken a dump. He definitely had a full load of venom prior to capture.
I gave it a fresh killed rat yesterday. Not too interested in it yet. Initially I just dropped his rat in beside him and he showed no interest. He still hadn't eaten it this afternoon so I picked up the rat with a hook and enticed him to strike it a couple times and left him alone. Don't know if that has influenced his desire to eat but I suspect not. Any tips or advice on getting this guy to eat?
Thanks,
Don

Actually, it sounds like you are doing fine. Leave him alone with his meal for up to 8 hours. If he hasn't taken it, remove the rat and try again in a couple of days. Be as quiet as possible when presenting prey and then leave the room.
By the way, it does have access to water doesn't it ?

Pinkies, fuzzies and hoppers are okay alive. Live adult mice are okay with larger snakes.
Never put live rats in with snakes. They can hurt the snake.
I feed all of my adult rattlesnakes and cottonmouths prekilled large rats.

Hi,
Sounds to me like your doing ok. I'd like to add that the snake will like some sort of hiding place in it's cage.
Another thought, this time of year, many snakes, especally wild caught, will shut down for the winter. If this is the case, the snake should brumated, that is, put in a room with lower temperture - between 50 and 60 degrees - for a couple of months. As it will still be somewhat active, it will need a water bowl. Before going into brumation, give it at least 3, un-fed weeks to clear it's gut. It's enclouser should be dark for brumation.
I've got 4 snoozing away as I write and a couple more to follow-- Hooray! Fewer cage chores!

Thanks Filthy. I gave him a hide box for a few days but he never used it. Preferred to lay there and stick out his tongue at me, so I removed it to give him more room. He's in the dark all the time anyway unless I'm checking on him. He did eat a fuzzy Tuesday morning.
