I thought I'd share this with you and keep you posted... I ordered a "hot" King Cobra a few weeks ago from a company that deals in both hots and venomoids. I despise the practice of surgically butchering a snake, but I didn't want to pass judgement on the guy, just wanted a good, clean king. Plus, I felt I'd at least save this king from certain death, so it was like paying ransom for a good king, so I delt with the guy.
I paid the price and after about 4 weeks or waiting, it finally came. (This was about 4-5 weeks ago.) It was an 8 footer and appeared healthy. I left it in a large enclosure with the proper heating, hide box etc. It was supposedly trained to eat rats, but it hadn't eaten yet. This morning I got up and it was dead. Needless to say I was deeply shattered. As I examined it, I noticed fresh stiches along both sides of its mouth. A venomoid. And there is no doubt in my mind that's what killed it.
I called the company and am waiting to see what they do to remedy the situation. If I don't get satisfaction, I'll post the name of the company and all the follow up actions.

Well, sorry to hear that your king was murdered. Second lets hope the mix up didnt happend in two ways and some innocent kid or inexperienced keeper somewhere who ordered a venomoid king doesnt have a hot one. Its one of the main reasons the practice should be stopped, and why the SHHS needs to take a stand and quit letting them be advertised in the classifieds,(whether or not it was ordered here or Kingsnake). But I sincerely doubt that will happen, heaven forbid that we actually divide ourselves from the venomoiders-they contribute so much to the hobby and this site(yea, thats sarcasm). Dont be shy post the name. I would never buy any hot from someone who also sells venomoids, even if they had Lachesis for $100, I'd pass it up, they cant stay in business without sales. Keep us posted on the situation. You should be Irrate.

First let me say I am truly sorryy to hear of the death of such a Mugestic King among Snakes. I hope that you can have them held respocibal for the death of the King, it just gose to show that these venomoid dealers care less about the health of such priceless animals, they only care about how much money they can make in the shortest amount of time. If I was in your position I would scater their name all over evry chat room and web site I could find if they dont do somthing about this. It has to come to a boiling point sooner or later, give them hell man.......Be safe ya'll and lets fight this non-sence to its bone........Happy herping Wally

Trex,
Sorry to hear about your loss. I fully understand what you must feeling. I had a similiar situation a couple of months ago. You can read about it topic King Cobras in the Experts section.
Shawn,
Great reply. I couldn't agree with your more.
Randy,
Glad to see you are back. I have missed being able to read your posts.
Later,
Todd

My one statement is that of the ransom comment. Whenever you see an animal for sell and you think you are saving it from certain doom, you are actually giving them money to buy several more in replace of that. So instead of saving one, you put others in danger of living in those conditions and even though you may take care of your animals, many other who buy from the guy with your support won't. Same goes for animals you see at the pet stores. You feel sorry for the animals in the cages in horrible conditions but the animals wouldn't be there if no one purchased them in those conditions.
I am not critizing you if that is what it sounds like. This statement is to everyone. You have surely thought of that before but just in case anyone hasn't.
Sorry about your loss. Good luck with everything.
Robert

Trex, I hate to hear about your loss... The snake and the money.. Please let us know what dealer scammed you so no one else will suffer a loss like you. I believe we all have been ripped off a time or 2 with reptiles... Thats one reason why I personally meet with the seller and pick the animal up in person. I had to learn the hardway like you did.. This is their reply from last night. It speaks for itself. Apparently he was "considering" doing something, but since I voiced a concern (even though I have never mentioned who it was) they have decided not to do anything as punishment.
"I can clearly see the sutures on that kings face, yet nothing was mentioned about it till it died?you didnt see it before then?...CLEARLY on our web page,we have our guarentee listed, you yourself said you saw the web page...it says ALL DOAS MUST BE REPORTED IN 24 HOURS,IT ALSO SAYS ANY PROBLEMS MUST BE REPORTED IN 24 HOURS. this is far after that deadline.I was going to let Dad handle this.however ,since you have decided not to wait for his return,I guess I will go by our clearly printed guarentee from the web site, and follow that...Im sorry to say we are unable to guarentee this snake, due to the fact we were not notified in 24 hours of any problem, and we have no idea how the animal was treated after its arrival...I am very sorry for your loss...God bless"
It should be noted that the king pretty much remained in his hide box most of the time, and when he did surface, he faced us, naturally, so a good, clear profile wasn't easy to see. Plus he was in his first shed since the butchery, (contrary to their claim) and the faint blue line was not easy to identify. Also, even if I had noticed it within 24 hours, it takes weeks to get anyone to respond to a phone call, so there is no way to prove you tried witin their time frame. It's all a scam, but until they absolutely deny me relief, I'll keep their identity under wraps for now. I'll know by the end of the day, so please bear with me.
In regards to the ransom comment, I agree, it was a poor decision on my part to give money to butchers. It's like paying ransom to terrorists.

Am I allowed to name the company? I don't want to step on any toes here, so until I get the green light, I'll hold back.
