I just noticed on another site that someone posted the exact road that they were herpin on.....
For those of you who have never heard the story of okeetee, here is what happened...
Kauffield talked about what a good place okeetee hunt club was in his book "Snakes and Snake Hunting" ~ After that people from all over the country decended upon the hunt club by the droves. The powers that be got fed up with snake hunters (and I can't say that I blame them.)
Today if you park your car near the hunt club it will be towed immediately and you run a high risk of being arrested for trespassing. (not to mention the snake population there was decimated)
It's always wise to keep the good spots between you and your select group of snake hunting buddies. It not only protects your future trips, it also protects the snakes there from overcollection and rounduppers.
Not everyone who reads herp sites have the snakes best interest in mind. There are people who will read your posts, go to those spots, and collect every single rattlesnake there and take them to the roundups.
read your posts carefully before clicking "submit" and you just might be saving a snakes life....

Good Point Chad. Back in '75 I got my first permit to hunt Okeetee Club and some of the surrounding plantations. I had a couple of friends with me. The main concern of the folks there was that we take the rattlesnakes, as they saw them as a danger to the quail hunters who were members of the Okeetee Plantation. Because of Kauffield's very specific and wonderfull book, there are a lot of folks who know about the area. Unfortunately, there are a lot of commercial snake hunters who have abused the area, and collected everything they see. There have also been lots of snake hunters who have trashed the place, and made a nucience of themselves with the locals. I would have to agree with Chad. If you know a good area, dont' post it on the net bulletin board things. It is only gonna' ruin the area for the future. Share the area with some close friends, but dont' give it up to the commercial hunting hacks.

Hey, I did not originate this thread, even though the site says it. Chad originated it, and he is right on!

I agree Chad,
I personally do not collect often. I just love to see snakes in the wild and let them on there way. I think if you want to realise any info you should do it more in email. Also to personally know the person.
