copperhead eye color

Can anyone tell me why some copperheads eyes are golden and some are red? I have found alot of northern and southern copperheads and some of their eyes are golden and some are red.

Im not sure if all snakes have the same eye color, but I have seen a Copperhead befor and its eyes are black.

Their pupils are black but the iris (at least all of the ones Ive found) is either golden or red. Im just wondering if northerns have red and southerns have brown or vice versa, or is it something else?

I have noticed this myself Jermey. My female copper has a unique color to her eyes, as a matter of fact, this is how I tell them apart. She has very beautiful eyes, very distinct color, very criptic. Bryan

I was thinking, It could be a way to tell the difference in males and females, Just like the eastern box turtle.

Ive seen southern too with the golden pupil. Im thinking that it could be the difference between male and female.
