Hey, does anyone know of any good parks for herping in mid-southest U.S.? I do not plan on keeping any of them, just photography. I live in North Texas and a 4-5 hour drive is about the max I'm willing to travel. Any help is appreciated.

The only state park i know that is awsome is Steven C. Foster, Okefenokee Swamp, GA. I have caught a canebreak and a water moccasin in it. The only thing is that I think it way to far for you.

David: You might try Ray Roberts Lake State Park, N. of Fort Worth. From there you could road cruise the Fort Worth Prarie or the Mineral Wells areas. Or prehaps the Possum Kingdom State Park, (kool name), near Caddo. It is near the Brazos River valley. In years past, I have walked along the Brazos and flipped flat rocks, and found Brazos River Watersnakes. You are also probably within driving distance of the Midland, Odessa, Fort Stockton, and Pecos areas. Dont know of any State Parks near there, but the road cruising for a variety of snakes you could photograph can be pretty good.

Thanks for the help. I'm especially interested in finding rattlesnakes of any species. I think I have narrowed it down to western Arkansas in a park called Devil's Den. If you've heard of it or been there, could you let me know what it's like and if it's a good place or not? Thanks again. Hope all you guys get some good stuff now that spring is here again.

Devils Den is a great herping spot. You'll likely find c.horridus emerging around the 1st of april. Its pretty rural, so i'd advise getting a map. Also, check out www.snakesofarkansas.com. Lots of folks on there that would be happy to hook you up on some good spots.
