A lady I work with, her dog was bit in the leg by a timber rattlesnake. Naturally, the hair fell out and leg swelled up. Now some of the hair has grown back, but her leg is still swollen. The bite occured 3 years ago and the leg is still swollen. Just curious, why after 3 years is the dog still having a swollen extremity. Thanks for all replys. Bryan

Hi:
Bryan:
Maybe the venom damaged the lymphatic system in that leg.

Hey Al, I am just curious. It makes sense, I have just never heard of swelling lasting for that long of a time. Does swelling occur in humans this long as well?? Bryan

That's a good guess Phobos. Scar tissue in the lymphatic system would definitely keep the leg swollen. That's the whole basis for elephantiasis.

Hi:
I don't know of any cases that had prolonged swelling but that does not mean it does not happen.
I would think that it could happen with snakebites from atrox, piscivorus,& horridus all have nasty local effects on tissue.
ALSO..Faciotomies could cause this to occur, just another good reason to tell the surgeons to put their knives away.
Cheers!
Al

I know of a fellow whom was bitten by a copperhead and his finger shrunk to the size of a pencil in diameter, and has remained that way for 20 yrs but yet it still has blood getting to it and is healthy.....

I know someone that has been bitten by a timber and his arm still swells up almost a year after the bite.
