Well what made me think to write this story was I was at phillip's web site and saw the pic of his mom holding the copperhead and I have to say I really liked the web site by the way.
but on to the story. back be for I started college I had a pretty good collection and had just added 2 easter diamondbacks and 2 canebrakes the largest of the 4 was a 5ft almost 6ft canebrake well we had just learned that my wife was pregnant with our first child. well one day while I was at work I and for some reason felt sick and went home when I got there there were four vehicles in the drive way and my grandfather and 2 of his friends were with him. when I got out of the truck first thing one of them said to me was you need to get rid of those snakes they said my mom was really worried about my wife and our unborn child. well I collected my self and went into the house and there was my mom and wife my wife crying her heart out and my mom saying either you kill the snakes or where taking my wife (marlena) well I said that neather were going to happen and asked if they would leave then my mom persisted to tell my wife that I didnt love her and that all I cared about where the snakes and the lights would run up our power bill and my wife calmly said that she loved me and if the snakes were apart of me well she loved them too. Well then I couldnt hold in my anger any more and started yelling and throwing things well they left and talked to my wife she said that she was asleep and my mom walked in shook her and said your coming with me or were going to kill shane's snakes my wife said she was going no where and there was no way that anyone was going to kill my snakes for one the snake room is locked and tshe had the key and on top of that my mother called my wifes mother and told her that I had big poisonous snake lose all over the house so after my mom left my wifes mother showed up and reamed me out real good so I threw her out and finaly was able to relax. Talk about my mom forming a lench mob aginst her own son. Well we mended that broke fence but to you newbes and young people watch your families when there worried about you and your wife or children, and always have your collection locked up if for any thing there safty anyway this happend along time ago and thought that I would share it with you.
Great web site Phillip,

I would disown my parents very quickly if they ever did something so irrational. I don't keep snakes but you can never allow your parents to interfer in your marriage like that. They are allowed to comment or make suggestions about your life but when they go too far like that then you have to put them in their place quick. I would have never spoken to my parents again if they got out of line like that. Your wife and children come first and then family and friends. You defend your wife and kids against everyone, even your family! It sounds like your mother is trying to be too involved in your life and control it. Mothers like that have to know their place and know that it is ok to be a part of your life but not if they are trying to run or wreck it. Regulation is important. If your wife doesn't want you to have snakes then that is a decision you two have to make, and if that were the case then I would say stick with your wife. But it sounds like you did the right thing.
Personally I wouldn't own venomous reptiles if I had a wife and kid but that is my opinion because I am very protective of people I love and don't take chances. But that is none of your mother's business.
Opinions of a non-married herper,
Robert

I agree with you, my mom was out of place and it took along time to fix the trust bond that was broken but, All is good now I currently dont own any thing right now well as for hots are concerned but, will in the future when I finish school and we move into a place like we had before where and I could have a reptile room that is to it's self and is sealable and lockable, but I felt I might let yall know that you never know how a parent will react given certain situations.

Wow, I really love my mom, but if she ever tried to butt that far into my life...I can't even imagine how to handle it. In a way, can understand after seeing how fearful some people are of snakes that they might honestly see it as the right thing to do, sort of like intervening if you were selling drugs out of the house or something, but dang... Luckily, snakes are not something I have to worry about. My dad might well be the person I would call to take care of my snakes if I go on vacation or something, and well...my mom's been putting up with him for almost 40 years...
