That has been a myth for a long time now. People say he died from crocs, snakes, and even other animals. I am almost positive he is alive and well.

That rumor crops up every time there isn't much PR on him. If Stev'o was killed by a croc it would be plastered on every news media outlet possible.
But ya gotta love the internet rumor mill.

Got this from a website. Robert Steven Irwin age 42 remains on life support today after a salt water crocodile inflicted a bite that caused severe head trauma. He was relocating a 9 foot salt water crocodile(the largest reptile on earth) to the Cape York Peninsula(known locally as the Kimberlys). Wes Mannion, who was his life long companion commented. "I am deeply saddened. Steve knew these animals like the back of his hand. This goes to show that anyone can slip up. Nothing will ease the pain, but remember, Steve died doing what he loved. Dont let this event cause hate towards any animal. Steve wouldnt want it that way. Lets remember Steve for his passion, his dedication, and remember him for giving his life to save a single animal. And my deepest symathy goes out to his family and his fans and all of the A.Z. staff."
Steves wife, Terri Raines Irwin was not available for comment but replied to the Queensland post by saying. "We have to carry on. I dont know how Im going to manage to live my life without Steve. My best friend in the world. He died doing what he loved but it pain is still there. I dont know what went wrong. His father(Robert) is taking this very badly. He want even talk and he just sits there staring into space."
When we decided to take him (Steve) off of life support, he was in very bad shape. He was brain dead 25 minutes after arrival. It is just shocking. Totally shocking. A vigil will be held in his hometown of Brisbane on Wednesday.
