Well, I recently got my first hot to start with and it is a baby western diamondback. Cute little guy, but quite aggressive. Anyhow, For now I have him on some Jungle Mix litter that I had saved for my burms cages. Somebody suggested to me to use Cypress Mulch and a Black Slate rock (for basking). Is this a good idea or not? I just want to make sure because I don't know if the mulch has pesticides, etc. in it. I was gonna use sand, but don't know if it's gonna be dust free and haven't had time to make it to the store and find out :)
Well, thanks in advance!
Ryan

The cypress mulch is a good substrait and looks good too, just make sure it is not to wet before you use it also news paper is less attractive but inexpensive and easy. Another substrait that I use on my atrox is brown indoor outdoor carpet or astroturf easy to hose off dry and put back in the cage and dosen't look to bad either
with some pine needles or leaves on top of it. Take care of that rattler and be careful!

Personally, I prefer to use a 50/50 mixture of cypress mulch and aspen shavings. It has a much more attractive color than cypress mulch alone. But cypress mulch alone works fine as well. Either way, just make sure you spread it out in the sun to dry and air out first. Fresh out of the bag, cypress mulch is quite aromatic.
Newspaper is used by many people as well.

Congrats Ryan, I use np, because I can reduce parasite problems this way. Only problem, doesn't look that great. Make sure you have an av source. Good luck, Tim

Yes, but I don't like it. It can be a haven for parasite eggs. Depends on how good you clean, Bill did a great job on cleaning, but I've seen people who don't clean that well. Heard you met my friend Jim, he was very impressed w/ you and the society. He's my favorite MF. Personally, he's the smartest ven. herper alive. Toxins, vet care, scale counts, breeding, etc. If it wasn't for Jim, I wouldn't know half of what I do. I actually met Jim through George Van Horn. We talked via phone for about 2 years before we had our in person meeting. Chuck couldn't believe what he saw. Neither could I, we all got hammered for 2 straight days. Best time of my life, love um. How's you're family? Sorry for carrying on, my posts in Herp Health, in Kingsnake, are taking it's toll. Keep up the great work, very nice site. Maybe Jim will one day post, and enlighten us . Tim
