I'm over in western PA and need a source of AV for gaboon vipers (bitis gabonica) and death adders (if there is an AV?). Also, I'd be interested in an AV for the monacled cobras (the albino ones really caught my eye). Info and AV sources on these would be greatly appreciated.
As for the monacled cobras...I am a first timer (own an atrox bought about a week ago) and have no experience with elapids. Anyone know of any webpages/books, etc. on their behavior, attitude, etc? I'm going to the show down in Monroeville, PA this weekend put on by the Pittsburgh Herp Society and there is a vendor that sells lots of books on hots and I was planning on buying a few. Any info. would be GREATLY appreciated.

Ryan, you're confusing me, or maybe I'm misunderstanding you. I thought you just got a atrox, whats up w/ the kaouthia? Don't put the cart before the horse. Don't depend on a zoo to save you're life, it's not their job. This is something you must do in order, it's for you're own good. What would you do if the zoo's closed? I know what you'll do, you'll DIE. SAVP's carry Naja, Bitis, etc. You will need to get USDA and FDA permits for this, call MD. You'll need WA for NA crots, have you're doc. call WA and get it(this depends on production though). Sorry to come down on you, just trying to help. Plus, get a good doc. that understands av protocols, av is only as good as the doc. A good friend of mine almost died from polylepis, because the doc. was a moron. Tim

To clear this up...
I was asking about the kaouthia because I'm really interested in their actions, behavior, aggressiveness, husbandry, etc. In other words, someday I wouldn't mind owning one. Someday when I know enough information on them and go from there.
As far as relying on a zoo to save my life, I don't. The only thing I was asking about sources were maybe I could buy an AV that I can stock at home and contact my local hospital (in which I did...they know how to treat WD bites, so they say) and see if they know how to treat the exotic species of hots for bites, JUST IN CASE something would happen. My hospital is about 15 min. away and they do carry some brand of AV (forget the name), but it covers all species of north AND south america (boiga, crotalus, agkistrodon, etc).
Just letting you know what I was thinking. Sometimes I ramble and blurt out WAY too much.
Sorry,
Ryan

Please explain this "lingo" to me...
"SAVP's carry Naja, Bitis, etc. You will need to get USDA and FDA permits for this, call MD. You'll need WA for NA crots, have you're doc. call WA and get it(this depends on production though). What are SAVP's? "call MD"??? WA for NA? What's the WA mean? (NA I'm guessing is North American). AV protocols? What'd that be?
Please clarify this...thanks
Ryan

Hey Ryan, WA is Wyeth-Ayerst, a PA av producer. NA is North America. SAVP is South African Vac. Producers. The rest is gov. agencies, USDA and FDA. I mentioned the zoo just to prove a point, this crap is serious and I just want to help. No matter what you need, av wise, I can and will help. Yes, I have my own av, so I'm not jerkin you're chain. I waited 1 year to get my first hot snake, I got the av first. Good luck, if you need help, I WILL help. Tim.

E-mail me privately, if you can (mechanical-animal@thefragile.com) and we can go from there. I'd love to get my own source of AV, but the reptile keeper at my local zoo told me it's impossible for exotics and next-to impossible for native species.

Well, I'm glad to know he's WRONG and that I CAN obtain AV to keep at home.
When your email is up and you mail me, I will respond ASAP. I only check my mail about every other day (no choice...no PC where I stay), so I will be in touch.
