Does anyone know the time frame for a dusky pigmy rattler to have her babies after her shed?
Thanks,
Augie

I`m not sure about the gestation perioud for Sistrurus but I would think they mate in march-may and give birth in august-october.

I know that shedding and having babies isn't related and the gestation period is 4 to 6 months. My dusky is gravid and due any time. All snakes shed right before the lay eggs or give birth. They all have alittle bit different time frame for having them or laying them after the pre-laying shed. I just wandered if any one know what it was for pigmies.
Again thanks,
Augie

Augie: You said ``All snakes shed right before they lay eggs or give birth.``
Where did you get that information? Can you site any publications that support that?
I can think of a few hundred snakes that did not follow that rule.
Of course, since snakes do not know how to read, maybee they missed learning that rule?

Mine gave birth about 2 weeks ago. The female has not shed for at least 6 weeks.
The babies shed the day after they were born and took day old pinks the next day.

As far as me saying all snakes, sorry that is what I was told be someone who I thought know what they were talking about. I just wanted a little advice, sorry my question started a controversy. Forget I asked.
I guess I will just wait and see when she will have her babies.
God Bless
Augie

Augie: You did not start a controversy, you just asked a question based on what someone had told you.
As Alex stated, shedding is not related to when the snake will give birth.
Sorry if I came on a little strong with my reply.
When someone says an animal ``always`` does something, it throws up caution flags. Animals might repeat an action time and time again, but they just might not.
When a snake sheds is related to a lot of factors, such as how fast the snake is growing, if it has injuries it is trying to heal, the season of the year, weather and temperature conditions, etc.
The main way you will know when the pygmy is about to drop her young is that there will usually be a noticable shift in her weight toward the vent region. This often will happen a few days before the young are born.
Hope this helps some. Best Regards JohnZ

I have been keeping snakes(both native an exotics, both venomous and non-venomous) for about 6 years now. I keep journals for every individual. I have never observed pre-birth shedding patterns in any of my snakes.
Take care!
Best regards, Alex S.
