Can someone explain to me how a 19 year old, saying he has been keeping hots for 9 years, is selling a taipan in the classified's? Can someone explain to me how he managed to acquire that taipan? I don't mean to be an a$$ ( and sorry Chris and Karl ), but what the hell is going on? With the BS laws that have hit my state (NY) over the last year, this kind of stuff really pisses me off! When is enough going to be enough!?! I know at times I can be pretty outspoken, and have been for 6 years or so, but it angers me that I can't buy anymore hots in my state, but a kid can. And the reason being, is because someone will sell one to him. It's no wonder why states are banning hots at the drop of a dime. Sorry for the rant, but this crap, along with 16 year olds having 40 year old mentors that let them handle their snakes and take pictures of them, is becoming downright ridiculous. And again, I'm sorry for my rant and my opinions.

Sorry dude, but I think I disagree on the first part. According to his profile he's legally an adult and has been keeping venomous for 9 years. Unless you have inside info that says either or both of these are not true, I don't see what your beef is other than jealously. But don't worry, I'm jealous too.
Now, if you want to gripe about him keeping venomous when he was 10, I can understand your concern but still, unless you know what he was keeping and under what kind of supervision...

Ummm, yeah I can agree, dude. A 19 year old that keeps taipans, and has kept hots for 9 years. What was I thinking?....must be jealousy.

Oh, by the way, before I really offend anyone. When I said 40 year old mentors, I was trying to make a point, 40 just happened to be the number I chose.

Okay, let's see.
I didn't read the profile in question but...
At 10, if I could have brought home my first venomous, I probably would have. It would have had to be something local (cottonmouth, copperhead, timber rattlesnake) because the internet and the huge network of venomous keepers that is in place today did not exist back then.
I would have learned everything I could (and actually did do this) from books that were available at the time.
Maybe I wouldn't have brought it home but just observed it every chance I could and called that "keeping" it.
Lots of people get into keeping venomous at a younger age than many of us would like to see. They also drive cars and drink alcohol and have sexual relations because they know so much more then we did at their age.
A 19 year-old with a Taipan? How long could he have possibly had it? Some things can't actually be changed. He has the Taipan and wants to sell it. Okay. He claims to have been keeping venomous since he was 10. Okay. These things you can't change. Across the country, they keep enacting laws that are anti-venomous keeping. We MIGHT be able to change that (but I doubt it). The reason I doubt it is that many many people will get online and type up a storm about the things that upset them (not specifically this issue - this fits across the board of all issues) but when it comes time to show up for hearings etc, they do not have the time. You can go back through articles and see my first article about the Fitzgerald Wild Chicken (ex Rattlesnake Roundup) to see exactly what I mean about this.
So, do I think 10 year-olds should be keeping venomous?
Not without extreme parental supervision!
For example, if my daughter had asked if she could call one of my Pigmy Rattlesnakes her own - I would have said "Yes, honey, that one is yours." but I would have still done the taking care of.
Do I think it is okay for a 19 year old to be selling a Taipan?
YES. Absolutely! What else can you do when you have bought something that is too much for you? Good decision!
Just my own thoughts,
Karl

Karl that's an excellent point and I agree 100%. The things that really chap me, and always has, is how they acquire them. I know it's easy, but how does a dealer actually sell these animals to them? I know 19 is an "adult" and they can go to war and what not, but he's still a kid. I remember a few years back when a 17 year old in NYS had a russell's viper sent to him. He had no experience and no license. It's only a matter of time until one of these young adults gets a serious envenomation, especially since they keep getting younger and younger.....that's the part that scares me.

Tj I agree with your point about Venomous keepers becoming younger, It scares me to! BUT I can also see what you mean about how he recived the snake and all the hassle it would cause if he was bitten,
It could only reflect BADLY on you guys over there that can keep venomous.
Here in England the law is tighter than a Ducks Arse (ass) so it is extremely difficult to obtain a venomous reptile.
So in that aspect we are "reasonably" protected from someone who just wants a hot. They cant just go on the classifieds and buy whatever snake they want, The laws in your state are obviously causing some concern and I understand your worries about the "joe public's" reaction to a Ten year old keeping hots, or a 19 year old having a large and extremely toxic snake.
Not to say he should't be able to own one, just thet its a nightmare waiting to happen (seemingly). As I can't speak for his experience with hots I cant comment wether he should or should't have the Taipan. As usuall it seems the live and let live policy is the best solution here, and perhaps some constructive criticism about being responsible for your actions is about all we can do.
Still it is things like this that stir people up into making some stupid laws that would never have been written if it wern't for some certain people not being botherd about what they do could ultimately ruin someones lifelong hobby, or worse there hobby and Job.
Hoping for the best, someone buy the snake and depending on who it is, We could relax a little over this particular issue! somehow I doubt it.

I can't comment on his experience either. I hope it's better than I fear. I know there is someone from Florida that comes in here that started at a pretty young age and was licensed at 18. I think he was one of the few and far between when the responsibility and experience factor came into play. I just can't help but cringe when I see some of these ads and posts though, it's almost an assumption that they have very little experience, but a ton of bravado. I guess I'll just have to shut my piehole and let it rest, and hope none take on more than they can handle.

if a 19 year old isn't responsible enough to do this or that, he probably won't be responsible enough at 40 either......by the time you're 16, you should have learned a lot about responsibility via work, school, driving, etc....
think about it, if a 19 year old isn't capable of keeping a venomous animal, then why the hell do you want him driving?
people always wanna emphasize this or that, but in reality, it's not "this or that" that is the problem, it's the individual.......parents are worse nowadays, fast-paced lives that make little room for family time are ok, and that's that......
people overall are less responsible.......the problem is NOT age related.....my 4 year old girl is more responsible than the tools i work with......age is overrated......i was running my dad's company (multiple stores, auto repair) at 19.......i'm pretty sure that if i chose to keep ANY venomous at that age, i could have handled it....i handled everything else.......the guys who worked for me and my dad were between 30 and 40.....they were and probably still are incapable......
the problem lies with our government's need to control everything by getting rid of it......steroids would benefit from CONTROL, not being banned.....same with most drugs......keeping animals is no different....control and education prior to keeping is ideal......that's what we strive for while keeping anything, a controlled situation........some are capable of that on their own, some are not, some just don't care......
but to say anything negative about the guy is just dicky......childish even, since you know none of the details......at 19, i could have handled it so why can't he?
at 40, some people do not have the common sense to have anything.......
age doesn't matter at all

Hey Tom,
I didn't say you don't have reason to be concerned.
Look at your original post. It starts with three questions (and names me too). All I did was try to give reasonable answers to your questions.
Ricky, you have some valid points about responsibility but I think you might have overstated it a bit. Some people can learn responsibility at a later age than others. They just have to want to. That's what you don't see very often. People wanting to get better at responsibility (or "ownership"). "I did that so it's my fault" along with facing the consequences has dropped off to "Oh, my bad" with a hope of no further consequences.
Just more of my personal beliefs,
Karl
