I am looking for a Vet for venomous snakes in or around the Charlotte or Gastonia area in North Carolina. I keep a lot of venomous snakes and am always needing medical assistance and medications. Some infections such as mouth rot and respritory infections are hard to fight without the proper antibiotics and medications.
Currently my female W. A. Gaboon which is 3 1/2' has an infection in her mouth. I opened her mouth and it looks like she was bitten by a rat and has gotten infected. There is a lot of swelling on her lower jaw and some yellow infectious looking coloration on her top jaw where it looks like she was bitten. She is going to "Hopefully" be my breeder female this year and I really want to get this taken care of ASAP, as do I with all of my snakes when they have problems.
Any information on finding a GOOD Vet or information on how to treat this effectively and SAFELY would be muchly appreciated. I have used rid rot on nonvenomous snakes, but it can be tricky to administer to a venomous snake. Thank you for you time and concern!!

Hi Bobby,
If you know of a good herp/exotic vet in your area--and I'm almost sure that Charlotte would have one--you might contact him/her. While I *highly doubt* that he/she would treat a venomous snake, you might be able to get the medications through them and some expert advice. Alas, in the world of hots we're usually forced to become our own vets.
I would also drom MsTT and email. (Give me your email addy and I'll forward your request to her.) I believe that she has a vet who will do some work on venomous snakes.
Cheers
Roger

Regarding the mouth rot most vets use an injectable antibiotic called Baytril it is also used for respiratory infections. Your Gaboon viper will probably need 12 - 14 shots one every 2 days. This is something you will have to do yourself. In approaching a vet regarding this problem. Ask the vet if they would be willing to weight the snake to determine the correct dosage amount, providing it is inside a secure container. Most reptile vets will be willing to at least do this. Your vet may require that you restrain the snake and open its mouth for exam. It would be a good idea to have a friend come with you to help in restraint or have a tube. Do not expect your vet to handle the viper. I recomend that you purchase a book called What's Wrong With My Snake? written by John Rossi D.V.M and Roxanne Rossi it is well worth the money and is packed with very usefull information.

I have a Vet in my area that comes to my house around 1 a month to look at my collection. She said if I need and Medications to give her a call and she will perscribe (SP) what I need without seeing the snake.
Most Vets will not do that until they see it. Most of them will not eaven come close to a venomous snake.
