It all depends on your method of searching. If you're the "new-age" herper the doesn't want to leave thier car to turn some stones, then the herping isn't very ripe yet. But if you're willing to put in a little leg work for it then there's a few things moving out there. It all depends on what it is you are looking for, and in what numbers.
A few of us from the zoo went out yeaterday afternoon here in Central-West,TX and in 3 hrs. turned up 10 different species of snakes (of over 27 specimens I think), 2 species of lizard, numerous scorpions, tarantulas, and other belly-crawlers. All just photographed of course.
As for night cruising, it's still a little early to be yeilding any real good results. As for the Ft. Davis area, you still may want to wait till "after" the monsoon season has blown through for better results. That's when things are more active there. I am guessing you are looking at the Davis Mountains and such? If so, the real activity begins after the big rains push through. But then again, snakes are snakes and they move when they move. You never know.
