No. Large operations will put rats into a large box and pump it full of carbon dioxide, effectively putting them to sleep - permanently. (That's how I buy mine.) However, if I have a live rat or mouse to pre-kill, I just thump them on the head with a metal rod a couple of times. As brutal as it sounds, it's very humane. As far as the rat knows, it's just "lights out". Also, as a paramedic, I am very familiar with the pathophysiology of brain trauma. People who suffer major head injuries never remember what happened to them (if they survive). Essentially then, it's painless.

its just a meal..clean and easy is all that matters...do most people really care about pain because being bitten by a venomous predator probably doesnt feel good....these people at pet depot got semi-disgusted that i wanted a feeder mouse..they are so holier than thou...but they do sell animals to whomever has the money and dont clean their cages often enough...
