Eastern Cottonmouth, A.p.piscivorous
Piscivorous means "fish eater".
Western Cottonmouth, A.p.leucostoma
Leucostoma means "white mouth".
Florida Cottonmouth, A.p.conanti
Conanti was named after Roger Conant.
There is no Southern Cottonmouth. That is odd isn't it.

Chris,
Yes it is odd, however, I have seen the term "Southern Cottonmouth" more than once; I wonder now, if they were refering to the Eastern or Florida Cottonmouth, since we know there isn't a Northern Cottonmouth.
perplexed,
Derek

Derek: Out of curiosity, where have you seen "Southern Cottonmouth"? I'm thinking that perhaps you have that term confused with the Southern Copperhead (Agkistrodon c. contortrix).
In case you haven't checked out the links page yet, here's a site that goes into some detail on tbe Florida cottonmouth & the southern copperhead.

Enjoy. You seem to have the right attitude. Keep it up.

Greg,
That could be a real possibility, because I normally study venomous by genus.
I will definitely check out the site/sites you have listed.
Thanks Much,
Derek K.
P.S. I will more than likely have mucho questiones, once I start digging into Coral Snakes of the Americas .

Greg,
I was quite fortunate acquiring it as soon as I did ! I initially ordered it from Amazon.com (Special Order 4-6 wks delivery), however, decided to check Barnes & Nobel(in stock), so I cancelled my initial order with A.com and placed an order with B & N. Result: delivery accomplished 3 days. Additionally I have been on a Spending Spree with regard to other Herpetological References, such as, Dangerous Snakes of Australia(Mirtschin), Reptiles and Amphibians of Australia(Cogger Sixth Addition), A guide to the Snakes of Papua New Guinea(Oshea), A Field Guide to the Snakes and Amphibians of Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand & Singapore(Numerous, VERY GOOD for the price), Rattlesnake Portrait of a Predator(Rubio), Snake Species of the World: A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference Volume 1(McDiarmid, Campbell, Toure), previously acquired The Dangerous Snakes of Africa(Sprawls, Branch), and of course Coral Snakes of the Americas(Roze).
So far, I have only had time to skim through most of the above, but hope to start digging into Coral Snakes of the Americas very soon.
I will most certainly appreciate any and all advice, guidance, ect., that you might convey upon me !
Respectfully,
Derek

Hi,
I've heard the term 'Southern Cottonmouth' used several times to describe conanti, but that was a long time ago and just in conversation. As it was used, it was just another, common name.

Hey Filthy,
You just confirmed the fact, that I hadn't imagined the term Southern Cottonmouth nor confused it with the Southern Copperhead.
Thanks,
Derek
