Many of the arguments being made against our right to keep these animals--danger to children, local pets, other people, possible negligence--are the same arguments being made against the percieved right to keep guns. If your right to keep your snakes is taken from you, how about supporting gun control? If you must obtain a permit to keep a python due to some ignorant fool, then someone who owns a gun should have to get a similar permit.
Just throwing this in for some interesting discussion. It's an idea that's been rattling around in my head for a while.
Cheers
Roger

Well, if you think that gun' industry generates a lot of money, and snake' doesn't, you've got the answer.

Roger, let me say right up front that I agree with you entirely, the argument is the same. Speaking of ignorant fools, let's change that to anonymous fools and take a look right below you're post. Now, just to help this discussion along and be objective, consider this. First, let's remove family from the picture and pretend you live alone. Now, you leave for work and leave a loaded weapon lying in plain view on your counter and leave your front door unlocked and ajar. Now let's assume that no one enters your home that day to take that weapon and use it wrongly. Second, same situation only it's not a loaded weapon, it's a uh, let's say, a monacle cobra. He finds his way out the door that was left ajar, and now irresponsibility takes a whole new meaning. Once again Roger, I agree with you completely. I live in Alabama where I just lost the rights you speak of and a permit is not even an option. Just want you to know that I'm on your side, just wanted to stir it up a "bit" and see what happens.

p.s. Just saw the pic on your profile. Is that a juvi Atrox you're holding? Is it alive? All I can say is BIG cajones, BIG BRASS cajones.

I don't know what "hot or not" is, but I see a button on it's ass. Tell me if I'm wrong. Anyway, your post that started this is one of the best I've seen lately. I hope things really get stirred up over this, I want to see where it goes. I've been handling hots (native hots) for just over 20 years, but it peaves me that I can't have anything exotic if I wanted too. Thanks for you're reply. Seeing your post and looking at your profile, you sound like someone I would like to talk to sometime. If you live anywhere near southern AL, let's go herping.
Later,
wls

I'm a US Marine stationed in Ca. Origionally from Va, one of the few relatively free herping states in the country.
My logic behind the suggestion is that we lose so many freedoms incramentaly. The Gun lobby has been stating this--rightly so--for years. I faintly remember a saying: "When they banned this thing, I stood by and did nothing. When they banned that thing, I stood by and did nothing. Then they banned my thing." Not the exact quote, but I'm sure that you gt the idea. It's logical to me.
I would very much like to make this case to Charlton Heston, though I doubt that it would get anywhere. I should note though tha the constitution does not ste a right to keep and bear venomous snakes. Rather, it is that we have the freedom to do so. (Which I think is covred under the "persuit of happieness" thing.)
hotornot.com is a place where you can have your pic posted and rated by other users. It's a laugh.
Cheers
Roger

Hey guys, I pray everyday that Pa doesn't doesn't ban hot herps...but I feel its probrably unavoidable..I lived in Fl and still maintain my florida venomous reptile permit( I've renewed it yearly for the last eight and still use it to purchase animals when I'm down there) ..it can be a hassel to get the paper work, proof of your hours, and inspections in at first but at least you can still have your herps...I really feel for the people in Alabama..time to find somewhere else to live. Ive been a hot herper for 14 years, and I don't enjoy the political hassels that come with the territory but I can tolerate it as long as there is still a system in place for me to legaly hold my animals...the minute they make it illegal it'll move undergroud which opens all kinds of ugly doors. If PA ever ban hots...Its back to florida for me.

if everyone would move to australia and give up on the u.s.a.(the political system has been and always will be a joke)it might send a message.....i had rather live here than romania but if i had the money and a waiting job, i'd bolt to the land down under....the states arent what they were envisioned to be 200+years ago....that's sad..not to say i wouldnt gladly fight for the freedoms i DO have but you also have to fight for the ones you should have....i feel like if religion and the fear of lawsuits were left out of a lot of decisions it would be a better place...

Your viewpoints are certainly interesting if somewhat skewed.
Should you decide to check, you will find that the laws regarding keeping herps in Australia are just as capricious and nonsensical as they are in the U.S..
For instance, exotics are entirely banned and some states and territories (of Australia) have severe restrictions on the keeping of indigenous reptiles.
I do fight for the freedoms we enjoy and believe that if it (whatever "it" may be at the time) isn't worth fighting for, it will disappear before anyone notices. I have travelled widely throughout the world (including Australia) and have found that although there are many individual instances where one country may have a better situation than the U.S.A., the overall quality of life cannot compare.
If religion and fear of prosecution under the law were not of issue, this country would never have come to exist. You really get a sense of how great it is here just by visiting in other countries.

PS Romania wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the damned vampyres! ;-) KHB

yeah but keeping native species over there is a little different than over here..i know a few people in queensland(i think) who are into herps...they do have their complaints though but it just seems like its on a smaller scale than here...over here every well backed extremist group usually gets their way in due time.....to me it seems like their selection is a little more interesting....i think i could do without keeping my copperhead if i had an inland taipan to replace it...but i'd probably be dead too....i'm a car nut too and thats something else...why does europe, japan, australia...they all get the better versions of our imports..280hp subarus, 240hp preludes...i still wish i were somewhere else...but it's not bad here...if u can overlook all the racist redneck with more guns than braincells...most are shorter than me so that makes that simpler...
