Greetings from the land of c.horridus & copperheads...NW Arkansas
Planning a trip to fl next week- was wondering if anyone could give me some info on herping in florida- as in- national forests, parks, good roads to drive for finding snakes....
Would love to see a c.adamanteus in the wild, or a coral snake, hell, I'd settle for a corn snake, anything but another black rat snake.....
Any info appreciated, will probably be in NW to north
central FL for the most part.
somebody help!

Not terribly far. If you can get to the St. George area, depending on how much work you want to do, there are 2 INCREDIBLE spots. However, you will have to plan, and work it a bit.
Little St. George (west of the army corps. "cut" that split St. George into 2) is an uninhabited island that is easily accessible by boat. Owing to the fact that it rcves very little human traffic, this is a great place to herp.
Even better, yet requiring a bit more work, is the St. Vincent Wildlife refuge. This is a HUGE uninhabited area, that contains MANY creatures not native to the area, and an incredible amount of herps. Again, no pressure from human activity. It is large, and has many fresh water lakes. There are things you will need to know about access however. And, for both spots, you will need to plan ahead, packing food, water, etc. It really boils down to this, if you want to put in the work getting to one of those places, you will be guaranteed success if you are an experienced herper.
Should you want to try something a bit easier, go to "Tates Hell" park, which is a huge govt. wildlife area, accessible by road. Really, that whole area is just an awesome place, not only for herping, but birding, hunting, fishing, etc. It is growing quickly, but in reality if you have never been there, you will be amazed that a place like Franklin Co. exists still in Florida. It is incredible. I ought to know. I grew up there! Do a google or other search engine search of the islands I gave you above, as well as Tates Hell. Alternatively, shoot me an e-mail @ rotfamly@cwv.net and I will give you more info. Good luck!
