hey dude
i am actually refering to the fact that they have on the ad that you can hold them. Telling people that you can hold any venomous snake is criminal.

experience doesn't matter to me, it's the public image that is aggravating......one of the first questions people ask is usually "do you hold them" and then "have you ever been bitten".......people don't realize the severity it seems, and then they go out of their way to kill them.....so much misinfo floating around i guess........but selling them as you would a small, happy colubrid seems like something illegal, at least misrepresentative of the animal.......i'm sure there are a lot of venomous snakes that would never bite unless they totally thought it was food, but who wants to take that chance?
just giving a VERY bad impression and seem to be setting themselves up for something bad later

I know people who have been bitten by copperheads, and its not a pretty sight, a friend of mine lost a finger to one, so to claim that you can hold them, to me, is just totally irresponsible, i always tell people that if you want to own anything venomous you should start out with something aggressive non-venomous, like a racer or a black ratsnake, and remember for every time they get bitten by them they could have died from it had it been a venomous one, once they can handle those without getting bitten, then they can concider a venomous snake, but thats beside the point here, venomous snakes are not "pets" you cant, and shouldnt, handle them all time like you would with something like a friendly boa, they are wild animals, no matter how long you have had them or how much you know about them, and they should be treated with proper respect.

Spikey Reptiles, it would seem that you want to be in the reptile business, and that you know some of the folks trying to sell mambas on KS, because you are defending them by saying what they have been in the reptile business for over 40 years.
Doing something wrong for 40 years does not make it right.
These days, the reptile business is being attacked by the animal rights folks from PETA, and HSUSA, and ASPCA, several Zoo Directors and Curators, biased media, State Legislatures and several other organizations.
All it will take in some states are a couple of more bites to get venomous snakes outlawed in those states.
Folks who pose on the web free handling snakes, or holding mambas behind the head, and offering them for sale, or saying baby copperheads are so tame they can be held in your hand, just to generate sales, are selfish jerks who do not care about the hobby as a whole. All they want to do is sell the snakes they have, no matter how it hurts the hobby.
If you truely want to be in the reptile buisness, you should not support these folks, as they are the ones killing the hobby, no matter how kool they seem with their combined 40 years of ``experience.``
Step out behind Spikey Reptiles and update your profile with a real name and some info on yourself.
You obviously have a good interest in reptiles, and a good attitude from what you have in the profile so far. Just be carefull about the folks you choose to look up to as mentors. I have no idea who the person in the photo holding the mamba is, and do not care. But I do know that he is doing something ``for show`` that in the long run will hurt the hobby as a whole, even if it helps him in the short term to sell a few mambas to folks who are impressed by by that sort of stuff. And if he gits bitten with his showmanship, it will hurt the hobby faster, and if he is killed by that snake, it will be worse still.
We have a good forum here, and we work hard to promote sensible reptile laws. You could be a part of that, and it could be an asset to your reptile business, if you look at the big picture that includes public perception of the hobby, and stop thinking that folks who handle mambas that way are kool. CJP Ionides is Dead. There is no need now for folks to pose like that with mambas.
Hope that you will give this some thought, and become a participating member here, and not keep trying to defend folks who hurt the hobby with poor husbandry tactics just for the sake of reptile sales.
Best Regards JohnZ

Shayne, good to see your updated profile.
I too have friends that handle venomous snakes in ways that could really hurt the hobby if they get bitten. I try my best to try to get them to be more carefull, and to look at the hobby as a whole. They are still my friends, although I do not agree with some of the things they do, and I do not support their reptile businesses, because it would be better if they eventually closed up shop and stopped selling reptiles, as it is hurting the hobby the way they do business.
If you start selling reptiles at one of the many East Coast Reptile Shows, you want to be remembered as someone who supports the hobby as a whole. Someone who sells quality animals at good prices. Someone who supports outfits like NCARK in North Carolina who is working hard to create good laws in that State, someone who signs the petitions to help keep good laws in the State of Florida, and someone who will fight to help protect your rights when they try soon to change the laws in Virginia.
I really would like to see your reptile business do well. When folks go to a venomous reptile show, they will remember you and support your business if you do business like that. And you will be adding to the economy that the legislature folks dont want to mess with.
People who show off too much in this hobby get some attention at first, but in the long run, they are shunned by most of the other reptile dealers and reptile buyers as being bad for the hobby.
Anyway, good luck to your in the reptile business, and thanks for taking the time to be open minded and think some about the big picture that will determine just how well the hobby will continue, and to a great extent, just how successfull your own reptile business will be.
Best Regards JohnZ
