Al,
I have had that experience myself... Not a very pleasant one. I had wrote vision concerning this problem. I had hope they would fill in the lip in question. I guess you could adhere some plastic molding to fill in the lipped area and correct the problem that way.

Hey Todd, I just had a random thought while reading your reply... what about filling it in with some of that superfoam (another name for it is Great Stuff")
It comes in a spray can and expands to several times its size. I know when cured it's pretty much animal safe. Dart froggers use it for backgrounds and fake rock formations all the time, and froggies would be a pretty good indicator if it were toxic.

he expando-foam would work fine , but it does degrade after a length of time , and gets to where any push on it will crumble it to powder .

Kenny is right, the foam will break down surprisingly fast, after a short while. Especially if it is exposed to UV light.
What you might do is fill the opening with foam, and then tape over it with duct tape, or alumimum or stainless steel backed tape. Or paint over the foam with an epoxie paint and seal it in.
What is really needed is a better cage design.
I have been working on that, and have the design, but am having trouble finding a plastics company that thinks it is worth the trouble to work with me on innovative reptile cages. I have run into dead ends at 5 major plastics companys in 4 states so far.
