The author is reflecting his ignorance of the environment and unfortunately reinforcing the ignorance of others by sharing his thoughts in writing. I will stop there before I say something less kind.

several things wrong,
1)"There's just something disconcerting about a creature which could either bite you and send a deadly poison venom running through your body or could crush you and have you for dinner."
notice how he said poison venom, what the F*** is poison venom?!
2) he mentioned that he didn't like mice but he wants to eradicate the rattle snakes in the environment, the number of rodents would sky rocket if this happened!
3) he has the vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure of a third grader!
i could go on and on about this idiot but i will stop here before i explode with rage.

What a load a cow pies. It's amusing (but sad) how he tries to make it appear that his approach to snakes is the academically justified choice.
When I teach classes, I occasionally like to point out that no one gloats when:
1. A fireman is injured fighting fire.
2. A policeman is shot by a criminal.
3. A factory worker gets tangled in a piece of machinery.
But let a herpetologist get bitten by a venomous snake, and it's "his fault fer messin' with them things".
Then I ask my classes, "Does society need someone to deal with snakes?" The obvious answer is yes. I get calls all throughout the year to deal with snakes in houses, snakebites etc. Then why persecute someone who deals with an element of nature that demands our attention? [Even if I do enjoy it?]
Society obviously needs us "snake people". They need to let us do what we do without their hindrances and negative opinions. I can't help it if that journalist is a wuss. But let him tell it to his psychiatrist. He doesn't need to be infecting others with his phobia.

The scarry thing is that he is just putting to words the way tens of thousands of ignorant red-necks feel about snakes!

Ok, maybe I'm not at a loss for words, here's my reply I just sent to him
Hello,
My name is Chad Minter and I am the author of Venomous Snakes of the Southeast. I wanted to respond to your recent column.
I could try and convince you that snakes are fun, interesting, and yes, just plain cute. I won't try to do that because your mind is made up about them and trying to change someone's conviction is pretty much pointless. It's your right to not like snakes.
You don't wear skin products, which is good. You certainly seem to have enough of an aversion to not try and kill snakes, which is good because most bites occur when someone tries to catch or kill a snake.
I do think you are mistaken about a couple of things and would ask that you reconsider this: Pouring gasoline down gopher tortoise burrows harms more animals than just the rattlesnakes. Hundreds of species use gopher tortoise burrows as shelter, including two federally endangered species. I have spent many hours using infra-red cameras to document the activities inside these burrows and have seen the damage that gasoline causes.
When the people use gasoline to collect snakes for rattlesnake roundups they are not only driving rattlesnakes from the burrow, they are also killing baby fox, Owls and Owl eggs, armadillos and a plethora of animals that you might consider "cute and cuddly."
Gassing of these burrows is also quite illegal (with good reason.)
I would also like to point out that all three rattlesnake roundups target the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake. The closest point that this snake occurs to Gainesville is about 120 miles south as the crow flies. You do have timber rattlesnakes and Copperheads in Gainesville though.
Anyway, my point is that you have every right to not like snakes and avoid them, but to condone an illegal and immoral practice is probably not the best attitude to take. Especially when young readers might look to you for guidance.
I've spent the better part of my life and lots of money trying to educate the public about this issue and hope you will take the time to think it over.
Thanking you for your time,
I remain,
Chad Minter
