This is just one of the new revisions to the FL permit systems. More information can be found through links provided at the Jacksonville Herpetological Society webpage (link provided).
Section 3. Section 372.88, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:
372.88 Bond required, amount.--No person, party, firm, or corporation shall exhibit to the public either with or without charge, or admission fee any poisonous or venomous reptile or Class I wildlife, as defined by rule of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, without having first posted a good and sufficient bond in writing in the penal sum of $10,000 $1,000 payable to the commission Governor of the state, and the Governor's successors in office, conditioned that such exhibitor will indemnify and save harmless all persons from injury or damage from such poisonous or venomous reptiles or Class I wildlife so exhibited and shall fully comply with all laws of the state and all rules and regulations of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation commission governing the capturing, keeping, possessing, or exhibiting of poisonous or venomous reptiles or Class I wildlife; provided, however, that the aggregate liability of the surety for all such injuries or damages shall, in no event, exceed the penal sum of the said bond. The surety for the said bond must be a surety company authorized to do business under the laws of the state or in lieu of such a surety, cash in the sum of $10,000 $1,000 may be posted with the said commission to ensure compliance with the conditions of the said bond.

Anyone here ever tried to get a $10,000 bond to exhibit their animals?

No, but I just finished looking into getting the current $1000 bond, and it would not be that hard to get other than costing $100 a year. I assume that a $10,000 bond would be at least 5 times that (assuming that some of the $100 is administrative cost). And of course $10,000 WOULD be harder to qualify for.
It certainly would put our refuge out of exhibiting venomous.
I thought someone had explained to Poppell how retarded this was. I'm fairly sure I was told by FWC that this bond has NEVEER been paid out in the 30+ years it's been required. It serves no (good) purpose whatsoever.

this is actually on of the more reasonable aspects of the bill passed, you are gonna need a permit to own large boas now and it is not easy to get, this includes allowing FWC to barge into your house w/o any notice and inspecting the cages at any time they please.

When was the last time a member of the public in Florida was injured by a reptile on exhibit? Is this needed or just more useless regulation that punishes the many for the irresponsibility of a few?

It (the bond) doesn't even have anything to do with the irresponsibility of a few, just the irrational fears of many...and the ambitions of one.

Oops, after reading more carefully, I see I missed the fact that they added Class I wildlife onto the bond requirement. Clever, since they can actually show instances of the public being injured by Class I animals and people will miss the fact that venmous snakes have never been a problem. I so hate politicians... Time to write some letters...

I used to carry the old $1000 surety bond to display. cost me $100/year and my insurance company actually knew of it and called it a "Snakehandler's Bond". So I would guess the new one is gonna cost $1000/year?
This seems like a GREAT way to make sure there is less and less education on these animals. Make people pay $1000+permit fees every year in order to do educationa lectures or displays- brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

Venom: My feelings exactly! I used to pay the C-note a year for the grand bond. Had I kept doing it (I quit a couple of years after the license itself went up to a C-note a year) I would have strongly considered putting a grand in a State account or something just to save the hundred bucks. The $10,000 bond may well cost a thousand a year, but you may be able to shop & find a better deal.
I did snake talks for free for a bunch of years for Game & Fish's Hunter Ed. program. They never offered to work with me on making it easier to stay licensed. In fact, I very nearly got busted by one badge-heavy wildlife officer who insisted my animals be bagged in the lock-boxes for transport to & from a lecture. I figured that would add too big a risk factor for a free talk, so I quit. I even went so far as to ask if a very large canvas bag carrying the lock-boxes would meet the stipulations, & was told that it would not. If any of the herp community in Florida thinks they have a friend in Tallahassee, think again.

New developments with FL exotic/reptile bills in the House and Senate, as well as FWC next meeting is coming up soon on April 11-12th.
Too much to posts, too many hyperlinks, I try to keep FL pages current:
