My brother was out walking his dog this evening he came upon a long big black snake with diamonds on his back he had its head raised up not sure if a an attack mode or not. My brother and the dog backed up slowly and walked away. He is wanting to know if this snake is poisnous. He doesn't want to harm the snake , but he also doesnt want the children in the neighbor hood messing with it. He lives in High Point Nc. If this helps. The sanke was about 10 to 12 feet long.
Thanks,
Janet

Verbal descriptions are extremely hard to pin down when it comes to snakes. I once did a check of the basic description that I get for snakes in Georgia, and found that it applies to 22 of Georgia's 41 species. Perhaps a review of a Reptile Field Guide for the state of North Carolina would help?

Yeah, people tend to vividly remember the pattern on a snake and still have it completely wrong, and snakes tend to double or tripole in size when viewed by someone who's afraid of them.
But if I had to take a WAG, I'd go with a Black Rat Snake. They can get up around 8 feet which easily looks like 12 to most people and have a pattern of blotches on the back that would look like diamonds if you pinched your nose hard enough...

In highpoint I would guess its a black rat, thats all we ever got in our yard, though copperheads are quite common in the area as well, no where near 10 ft though.
