A few times I've come across people (or maybe its the same person, I don't know) with Grand Canyon Rattlesnakes Crotalus abyssus. But isn't that an Endangered Species only found in Grand Canyon National Park? Or am I mistaken?

This is just a wild guess, but there could have been breeding stock in place before 1978 when the ESA took effect. I've seen some new york bloodline timbers that have been in a breeding colony since way before they were protected.

they also occur outside of the park. you are not allowed to collect them inside the park, but its legal to collect that same sp on the outer areas of the grand canyon. that is info per a close friend that hunts the area. i have never done any collecting that far west myself.
