Hi!
I´m planning a vacation in northern California in march and would like some info on what species of rattlesnakes that can be found there?
I will live close to Sacramento.
TIA

Hey,
Northern California has two species of rattlesnake. From the Mountains West to the coast, you may find C.v.oreganus, or Northern Pacific rattlers. East of the mountains in extreme northeast CA, you may find C.v.lutosis, or the Great Basin rattlesnake.
Northern Pacifics can be found on Southern-facing rocky outcroppings up to elevations as high as 9,000 to 11,000 feet. Great basins can be found in rocky flats and open areas that also have rocky outcroppings and South-facing hilsides, generally at much lower elevations. Depending on what time of year you are searching, it usually works well in the Spring to look around the base of rocks and outcroppings where there are plenty of cracks that access the underside of the rocks. Look in areas where the sun has been warming the rocks for a good part of the day, as these are the places the snakes will choose to bask. Early in the spring, when the temperatures have been above 65 degrees for a couple weeks, you may find more than just a few in one location, so when you hear that first rattle, watch your step!
Good luck.
