The Columbia Reptile Show this weekend was a lot of fun.
It was great to see old friends, and to meet new friends.
There was a huge turnout for the show both on Saturday and Sunday. Many vistiors drove hundreds of miles to attend the show.
The vendors brought a tremendous selection of animals, many that that are rarely seen outside of zoos.
Sales by the vendors were down a bit, but this probably has a lot to do with the economy of the country as a whole.
The Repticon folks again did a great job in presenting an Excellent Reptile Show !
Best Regards John Z

I'll second John's post. It was really great to see everyone. I think that there was one of the biggest variety of herps that I can remember. Maybe Cathy will chime in on the actual number of attendees, but I thought it was also one of the biggest crowds that I remember. One thing that we should promote to the show organizers is that I think they should have the ability to tell vendors to pull animals off display if they are obviously injuring themselves in the containers. Although I did not leave the table as much as usual, I saw a Deinagkistrodon that had completely rubbed its nose off and there was a mamba that had severly rubbed its nose on top of some jaw problems. These animals should have been pulled by the vendors without some one telling them but if the promoters would carry a bigger stick, I think it would help.

Bob, you make a very good point about the Deinagkistrodon and the Mamba.
Both of those animals should have been removed from display early-on by the vendors.
If the vendors lack the common sense / perception to do that themselves, then the show promoters / security need to request that the animals be removed from display.

I had a great time at the show and did pretty good with sales. I did not sell any albino easterns, but sold all of the surplus normal easterns I brought (9). As usual, I sold everything I needed to sell before the end of the show. Great to see old friends and meet new ones.
Besides the retic and green tree python that eluded re-capture, everything else went smooth that I saw.
Looking forward to November already.

Yea, the show was fun. I got to see some people that I haven't seen for several years! Ya know something,..it's funny....two of them had gotten out of the trade,..........but are now getting back in. I dont care what anyone says,....you can't walk away from this hobby. It leaves a large void in you. You guys are right though about the animals that were rubbing themselves raw. I saw the mamba and a few cobras that were doing that. I also saw a couple of pythons doing it. It's easy at a show to not see it happening right away because you're so busy. But once you do, take them off of display. If for nothing else, it makes you look bad....as if you're trying to sell a sick animal. Ya know what I mean?

Ummmmm....... "Besides the retic and green tree python that eluded re-capture" ????
I did not hear about those.
Does that mean that they are still roaming the shriners temple or the streets of Columbia, where they might be found in someones backyard and start an effort to have exotic snakes banned, and might start a lot of bad news coverage ???
Proper caging should be top priority for dealers at shows. I wonder what kind of caging they were in, and how it was secured ???

Well............probably in deli cups. I noticed some were in actual tanks. I think I had heard that a sugar glider had gotten loose as well.

I didn't hear about any escapes, either, and I was there for most of both days. I was pleased overall with the show, with the selection of animals and with the conditions of the animals. I did see some of the snakes, most notably the Sharp-Nosed Viper and the Mamba, that had rubbed their noses very raw, and a Rat Snake that was breathing through its open mouth, though its overall condition and weight was good, but I didn't see any dead animals, like I've seen at some previous shows, where animals had actually been in their transport containers for so long that they'd begun to decay, and they were still out on display and for sale! There were a lot of animals there that you don't normally see at shows, and some unusual morphs, especially in the venomous section, and there was even a pretty good selection of invertebrates, which I'm really into. I was able to pick up some rare tarantulas that I'd been trying to find for years, as well as some "true" spiders that are usually not seen at shows at all, and of course, it was good as always to see people that I haven't seen or talked to in many months, or even years. It was almost like a family reunion of sorts, really, and I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout, which was really great in spite of the gasoline prices, which I feared might keep a lot of people away. Saturday was bigger than Sunday, in terms of the attendance and sales, but even on Sunday I still had a bit of trouble finding a decent parking space!

I enjoyed the show as well. Saw many venomous herps you don't usally see at shows. Picked up a gaboon from victory reptiles. Had a great time.

John,
Yes one 3 foot retic and a chondro is what I heard was loose from the staff. A larger retic had also escaped but was found right away. I mentioned a fumigation to help find the fugitives. Yes a sugar glider also escaped capture.
But hey I had alot of fun! I was allowed to climb the towers to take some pictures. I will post them soon.
