A new photo has been posted in the Snakes for Identification Section of the Photo Album.

Rincon de la Vieja national park, in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. Lady is wondering if it might be a baby fer-de-lance or some other species of pit viper.
Unfortunatly, the photo is very blurry..........
So folks, what do you think ?
Best Regards John Z

C. durissus, one of the Neotropical Rattlesnakes, but I still haven't learned to tell the subspecies apart.
Either way, about as dangerous.

Jeffrey, I think you are right about the snake being a juvenile Neotropical Rattlesnake.
The striping on the neck, and the facial pattern match, and the range is correct.
In looking through Solorzano's book, I really do not see any other strong possibilities.
Too bad the photo is so blurry, and did not include the tip of the tail.
Best Regards John Z

It's for sure Crotalus simus. Bothrops asper is absent from the dry pacific forest which makes of the Guanacaste region of northwestern Costa Rica.

I was trying to decide whether to mention after a little research that it might be C. simus (which used to be C. durissus somethingus) or just wait for Joe, when my comuter went into coma...

John, Larry, and Joe,
I am getting too lazy to look up info in multiple references. Solarzano (2004) has it listed as a Crotalus durissus, Campbell and Lamar (2004) revised this and it is now C. simus (particularly C. simus culminatus). Thanks Joe.
