PETCO SUX - Enough is Enough !

I was growing really weary of the local Petco, with the unpriced items, sickly fish on display, dumb workers, dog grooming, sickly reptiles, and over priced items. Imagine, $54.00 for a 20 gallon long aquarium ! No accessories, just the tank. What a bunch of crooks.
Today was the last straw. I purchased a 24 inch strip light to go over one of my neodesha reptile cages. It comes with a floresent bulb that is supposed to be a good spectrum for plants and animals.
Well, I get it home, and plug it in and it does not work. I take a look at the bulb, and find the bulb is burnt out and has dark areas on each end of the bulb. In other words the thing was used to the point where the bulb burnt out, then someone returned it. And the dumb masses at Petco put the thing back on the shelf to sell as if it was brand new. There is no excuse for a company treating customers like that !
I will never spend another penny in any of their stores again, and hope they go out of business. I encourage others to not shop there also. Find some mom and pop pet store. Stay away from the big corporate PETA loving, HSUS loving piece of cattle dung called Petco ! Buy your pet supplies online, like I should have done !
Guess it is about time I filed a complaint with the Department of Agriculture about the health of their sickly animals.
Best Regards John Z

i work at a petco and can say that some are not that bad, we send any animal that even looks like it could be sick to a vet, i mean how many petstores or even breeders would send an anole to a vet ? take the lamp back and they will give you a new one.
for the dumb workers lol i cant say about that because everyone i work with are pretty good but its not easy to find someone that will work that also know what they are doing, so you have to hire who will work and sometimes that doesnt work out so well.
i can tell you that the people that work at the store may not care so much about the animals but they are supposed to send anything to the vet that seems sick no matter what. even the gm has to send an animal if one of the workers say it needs to go. there was a gm at a store that didnt do that, i guess someone said a guinea pig needed to go to the vet and he said no, and a few days later they said it again and he didnt let them take it, he was fired a few weeks after that.
i though the same thing about petco and petsmart before i started but when our gm told me that if i see an animal that has no water to get it even if i stop helping someone. as for the prices being high we dont control what they tell us to sell it for.

Jason, you are right that I will take the light back.
But, I should not have to. I will have to use $10.00 worth of gasoline to return something that should have never been put on the shelf as new, when it was used.
Dont you get that ? Or do you put defective, used merchandise back on the shelf of your store also, without inspecting it for damage ?????
If you think Petco is so great, then ship me a 24 inch bulb for the light, so I do not have to drive back there ! Send me an EMail and I will tell you the address to ship the bulb to.
As far as sending an anole lizard to a vet, that is dumb also. Feed the durn thing to a snake. Problem solved.
Best Regards John Z

I have been avoiding Petco for 8 or more years now. It started over 8 years ago (or more, my memory sucks, it was early 2000 or sooner) when they went AR, politically correct, and decided NOT to call the animals they sell PETS, but call them ‘companions’ instead. I contacted their PR person who replied with more AR crap, so I replied back and suggested they should then rename the damn business from PETCO to COMPCO to keep things in sync.
I shop at Petsmart, local feed stores or online now.

Mom & Pop stores are going extinct, particularly in the pet business. They have an unbelievable overhead and many just cannot compete. PetCo. PetSmart, et al. are the WallMarts of the pet world. They have always stood by their products for me, but not to my satisfaction. The time and expense is always on the customer.
There is another problem with these large chains. Many of their wares are now proprietary. For example, PetCo is the parent company of Aquatic Gardens. These aquarium accessories, such as air pumps, are manufactured and packaged in China (check me on that) and sold only at PetCo. Not only are they pieces of crap, but there are no parts available for them. They treat the items as though they were rain checks or rebates. They find it cost effective to replace the item (again at the customers expense of time and trouble) rather than to stock and provide the parts. They know full well that in today’s throw-away economy only one in ten, or so, will complain and demand satisfaction. The rest will just buy a new one! They treat their customers as a captive clientele.
I still like to buy from a retail store, not on-line. However, when I have a choice of brands in a mechanical item I ALWAYS look on-line to see if parts are available and that the item is manufactured by an independent company. I shy away from items that are proprietary to a specific chain retailer. They are often burdened by additional specifications mandated by the chain store’s bean-counters and frequently are inferior in quality.

Man John do i know what you mean. I remeber one time I bought a heat lamp and bulb. When I got home to try it of course the bulb was burnt out. I dont like petsmart or petco. I really get tired of them judging people who feed live rodents. I cant seem to get it through there thick heads that my ball python will not eat frozen and im not starving my snake for months to try and force him to. Its funny how some of those people will feel sorry for a live rat but the same people would kill a rat real fast if they found it in there house.lol.
Before I recently moved I would go to an independantly owned pet shop and they were awesome. Very good people. They really knew what they were doing. Now I live so far away from them I just cant go that far all the time. Unfortunatly the only pet shop close to me is petco, but, I will only go there if I have no other option. Makes me want to get a loan and open my own petshop.lol.

Oh I forgot to mention, like John said. I paid $60 for a 20 gallon aquarium! Not to mention another $15 for the mesh top and clamps. I would really hate to add up the money I've spent in that store for there overpriced cheap items, but...what is not overpriced these days...

john where did i say petco was so great ? i agreed with you if you didnt notice. it was stupid they put it back on the shelf, someone probably returned it and the register person probably just put it down and didnt put a return to vendor sticker on it, so it was put back on the shelf. i would be pissed if i was you too
as for the prices i always say most are to high but we dont get to pick the price they just tell us what to put them at.
i would have just put the anole in the freezer, i wouldnt have try giving it to a snake since we only had ball pytons at the time, but they are pretty weird about that stuff, we are not allowed to feed live in the store so if something wont eat frozen, i just take it home.
they have alot of stuff they need to work on and some employees are not the brightest people, but there is not always enough people that know what they are doing to hire, it also happens in other places to i talked to zoo worker and she told me porcupines shot their quills and she was one of the people that worked with them.

I have mixed emotions about any retail petstore. My nearest petco about 20 miles away has a damn good reptile expert. The rest of the staff I wouldn't trust to stock shelves and clean bathrooms though.
As far as being expensive, that's just business, between payroll, lease or rent on a building, utilities, blah, blah, blah, that's just stone cold reality.
Same thing goes for mom and pop pet shops. I've seen many of those fail because of a severe lack of business sense. They love the animals and have great expertise, they just don't know how to run a business.
Also it can be said about 1 man operations as well. It's hard to make a decent margin when 85%+ of the folks breeding snakes are selling baby corns for $20 or less in some cases. I've seen the same issue for adult snakes as well. Selling way cheaper than they should be. If people in this reptile trade would take a serious account of what it costs in terms of labor, food costs (rodents), and housing, etc. You would find most are doing well to break even. But I suspect most are selling at a loss----again lack of business sense, plus the occasional breeder who will cut throat prices. Free market economy, gotta love it.
Now it sucks that the bulb was burnt out, and that's a basic customer service issue that can be resolved. But I refuse to get in pissing contests about prices of goods and services.

Jason, because you work there, you can do what you can to improve the Petco that you work at into a better place.
And you are learning skills that will help you open your own petshop in the futere if you choose to.
As far as the high prices, well, that money is not going to pay the folks who work there, and is not going to pay the rent and utility bills. Most of that profit is making it to some Petco Corporation folks somewhere along the line.
But what else is new. There will always be the greedy folks who make most of the money in most any business.
Jason, do what you can in your own situation.
Best Regards John Z
