Cable worker bitten by possible venomous snake in Hollywood
By Alexia Campbell
South Florida Sun Sentinel
1:05 PM EDT, August 20, 2009
HOLLYWOOD
Authorities say it's possible the snake that bit a cable worker this morning is a venomous green mamba that is native to Africa.
The Comcast employee was working outside a home in the 2300 block of Taylor Street about 9:30 a.m. when the snake in a tree bit him, Hollywood Fire Rescue Division Chief Mark Steele said.
The worker was taken with a swollen arm to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he is in stable condition, Steele said.
A Venom Response Unit from Miami-Dade is trying to figure out the snake's species before using antivenin, Steele said.
Firefighters and police searched for the snake or anyone known for handling exotic snakes. Nothing has turned up yet, Steele said.
The victim was shown pictures of various snakes, and he picked out a green mamba.
The 3-foot snake that bit the man was green on top and yellow on the bottom, Steele said. Firefighters have the antivenin for the species on hand, but do not want to use it unless the victim becomes seriously ill.
No one in Florida has a license to own a green mamba, Steele said.

Green on top and yellow on the bottom? Good lord! He was bitten by a Green Bay Packer! They've been angry ever since this whole Farve/Viking thing.

<<Green on top and yellow on the bottom>>
Sounds like humongous cucumbers I am growing next to tiger cages, maybe I need to turn them over so they are all green from the sun, and don't look like green mambas, before my neighbors call 911

Yet-another case of a native, common species being mistaken for an escaped "exotic" and dangerous animal! I've seen Rough Green Snakes that were three feet long, and of course, they're bright green with yellow bellies. Many of the Yellow Rats found from the middle to the northern part of the state are also greenish in color with yellowish bellies, and it would be no stretch of imagination for one of those to be in a tree and for it to bite someone who messed with it. A "swollen arm"? Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Dendroaspis have neurotoxic venom?

That's because Florida doesn't issue licenses to keep green mambas. It issues licenses to keep venomous reptiles. The green mamba is just a line in ones inventory as with several legal keepers I know (at least two of which have them on public display).
A rough green snake and a bee?

Hey guys, we are laughing at this….but the latest I heard, and this is very unofficial social media type stuff, this guy responded to Mamba antivenin. If that is true, sorta takes the fun out of this.

All kidding aside, it's a Mamba bite for sure. Someone in the area was keeping it without a permit and had it escape and or released it. A Rough Green Snake doesn't produce facial paralysis, numbness, and breathing problems. Face it folks, we'll be lucky if the hobby makes it out of 2009 in one piece.
