Norman,
I think you are on to something there. I thought that seemed a bit off for a Ball Python.

He could be...
I'm not familiar with these laws as I don't keep these types of snakes. We may never really know the truth...
Take care...

It's not the idea that he sold or shipped a ball python. It's the fact that FWC clearly states that everyone is required to have a dealers license to sale ANY reptile even a pet whether it's a reptile of concern species or not.
I never focased this conversation on the ROC species or hinted that my friend broke any ROC laws. I simply stated the facts as I know and understand them.

I'm not sure I agree with the law but on the other hand I sort of understand. It's a nickel and dime license and shouldn't really apply to some people. If you own a few snakes and you just don't want one, who cares! If you are a breeder or dealer then fine! However (SOME) people will abuse the law and never admit they are a dealer or breeder and never get the license.
Is this him? I found this article...
http://www.nowpublic.com/culture/florida-man-busted-selling-snakes-whats
Florida Man Busted For Selling Snakes! What's Up With That?
A New Port Richey Florida man, who resides only a few miles down the road from me, was busted for selling Pythons the other day. He claims, "I was selling them for around $175, . . . We can't even pay our bills right now, so every dime was going to them, just to pay the house payment and electric."
Well that's just great . . . now Americans have to resort to selling snakes, because the economy sucks as bad as it does!
I know a number of people that raise snakes in New Port Richey Florida. And I'm running into more and more of them. I know one fella whose snakes were stolen a few years ago and he was on the local news as a result. I know another fella that has a twenty-foot Anaconda. I know another fella that goes on Rattle Snake hunts and thinks nothing of grabbing hold of Rattlesnakes (with his bare hands) should one appear in his backyard.

I love how you all just sit back and agree with everything the legislators are doing and take it with stride, and also how at the slightest hint of a fellow venomous snake enthusiast doing something illegal gets you all so passionate about the law. Like doing so is going to help our cause in any way, shape, or form. Maybe if we all look good they will ignore us.
You all need to learn from the gun community. They know that no matter how they look the government is going to keep passing laws restricting gun ownership. They are doing it constantly here in CA despite no real violent events. Grow some spines instead of agreeing with all those who are all too eager to take away our rights.
I'm pretty sure in the revolutions around the world and including the one that created this country the citizens all had the same mindsets as you guys. "Maybe if we look like good citizens the government won't be so mean to us and won't take away our rights."

Scott,
Yes he simply told the judge that he could not afford the fines and got sentenced to 4 months in the county jail. He did have the oppertunity to accept 6 months probation with (i believe, but honestly not sure on the amount) a $500 dollar FWC fine, but for someone who is only making about $800 a month and has a family to support with atleast $1200 a month worth of bills, Where is he supposed to come up with that extra cash? He obviously cant sale any more snakes!! Plus on top of the FWC fine, but orange county also charges people on probation $110 a month for supervision fee's and he would have to pay the court fee's plus the required $50 for the public defender. If anyone fails to pay court finaniacal obligations, Your looking at 180 days (6 months) in the county jail and if his probation officer would decide to violate him for not being able to pay within the courts window, Now he would be looking at a year in the county jail for VOP.
How is this justified??? Im sorry, but with the shape of the economy today, I think it's in everyones best intrest to look the other way when someone tries to rehome their pet snake and be happy that he is not on the corner with the rest of the losers trying to sale crack or herion to our kids.

Even in tough times, you have to follow the rules, Bro.
Epic fail if we are talking about this guy:
“Fish and wildlife officials seized 12 pythons from a New Port Richey home Wednesday night.
According to officials, investigators found eight Burmese pythons and four reticulated pythons inside the house at 3632 Haven Drive.
The snakes ranged in size from four to nine feet long.
Bradley Scott Dean, 19, has been cited on second-degree misdemeanor charges of possession of reptiles of concern without a permit, failure to present a valid wildlife dealer's license and failure to microchip the snake.”

They story isn't clear. How can they bust in and charge him for not having the permit to sell? The article never states he got busted for selling them, just that he didn't have the permit to sell, (I understand the other charges). The media sucks! It might have been a Ball python he sold and that gave FWC the reason to invade his home but now it looks much worse because the media leads you to believe he was selling Species of Concern. (He may have been, but on the other hand...)
There are holes all over this story... however if he sold a ball and that's it he may have been let go with a warning however if this is the same guy in the story, it's obvious it's not just one law he broke!
No pity!
(IF THIS IS THE SAME GUY, IF NOT pardon me)

Let me just state that I think selling non Species of concern should be allowed to some people without a license. If Joe Blow has 2 or even 7 snakes in his collection and he needs to sell it FOR WHATEVER reason, so be it! However nickel and dime the dealers and breeders if you must! I don't agree with all our laws but when it comes to species of concern and the right to keep them, I choose to follow those laws. (Not that I own any but...) If FWC tells me I need to mark this or have that to own Venomous, I damn sure will do it even if I don't agree or if it's a pain in the butt! I don't like paying $100.00 for a VR License when I once paid $5.00 but it's the law and the cost to keep my hobby. If I brake those laws, I face the man!
Laws can be changed, if you or anyone wants to fight FWC so that people who want to sell 10 snakes or less a year should be allowed to with out the nickel and dime permit, I’ll sign in favor!

Real quick, just to clear up the issue. My friend is NOT the same guy that got busted in New Port Richie. My friend lives in Orlando (about 3 hours away) and he did not get busted with any ROC or venomous species. He simply got busted saling and shipping a common normal ball python to an undercover agent without a dealers permit.
