This, to me is a bad idea.
If a hundred people show, or less, that gives the impression that very few people will be effected by this. Or worse, it will give a false impression that very few really care.
Peta and HSUS may rally against you, and if history has shown anything to us, the reptile community screams a lot, but never backs it up. If they show with 50 and the AR folks show with 1,000 then who do you think is going to come out on top?
Just a bit of advice for what it's worth.

It would only be of benefit, if the reptile folks can
turn out by the THOUSANDS !

I have to agree that this is not a good idea - I cannot imagine that many of us would have the time or resources to make such a trip, and a small turnout would surely subject the entire herp community to ridicule in the press.A far more effective strategy would be to write positive letters of support to Senators Imhofe [R-OK] and Cardin [D-MD] expressing our thanks for their efforts in behalf of snake owners and letting them know they are appreciated.

Perhaps Rexano could have a sign up sheet for folks who can make a firm commitment to attend ?
That way, they could know in advance, somewhat, how many would show up, and if the numbers were too low, then cancel the thing ? And, if it looked like the reptile community would turn out in Thousands, they could give it a go ?
Reptile folks talk a lot, but, when it comes time to actually do something, very few of them show up. I think there are a lot of keepers in Virginia, & Pennsylvania.
How many of them would be willing to drive a few hours to Washington ?
Best Regards

Another herper made the suggestion that we alert the media and law enforcement that thousands of us plan to protest the python bill by simultaneously crossing the state lines with the snakes in question!
The amount of media attention produced may be effective but only if thousands agree to do this.
Food for thought...

I think doing something that could be "illegal" will only bite us in the rear in terms of crossing state lines with your pythons - in my opinion, it'll do far more harm than good. As Doug said, too, this "march" will most likely backfire on us - the herp community has a history of showing extreme apathy even in the wake of something as bad as this. It would not surprise me if only 100 people (or less) show up...just look at the classifieds - you see the same snakes being sold for the past six months and folks have the dough-ray-me to travel all over the US to attend a rally? I know I don't. I think the work of USARK and others and continuing to contact our senators, and having mass emails to congressional leaders and having discussions with them has a much better chance of success and fighting this bill. Unfortunately, we have looked into the mirror a little late as a herp community and have utterly failed at self regulating our hobby - now others are doing it for us. Hopefully, we have enough fight left to knock some sense into a few folks when the vote comes down.

Tim if it is done before the ban is in place it is all legal .It is a interesting idea.I often wonder if all of the effort is for nothing tho.The whole idea of a ban seems more illegal than robbing a bank to me.THE LIMITATIONS OF PERSONAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AS WELL AS ABILITY TO PRODUCE PROFITS.As well as the distruction of an entire industry as well as all the animals that have been produced by said industry. To me this seems like a crime of insurmountable proportion .I do not ride bulls or raise horses but do not wish the industry to end.Yet with reptiles these types of thinking are not even considered ..I may have a radical view of ownership rights but they are founded in sound thought.Americans have long ago given the right to make the decisions away to the wrong people.A bill needs to be passed to prevent this from ever being able to ever come up again. We could call it something like the constitution of the united states of america .No amendments to this written law could ever be made as that would change the freedoms of said nation .WOW what an idea if such a document existed ..

I believe it was also stated that if you couldn't make it to DC, you should show up at your state capital. That might be more do-able for a lot of folks. Also, crossing the state line with your python wouldn't be illegal, as even if the bill passes, it would include an effective date, which wouldn't be immediately. I'm not sure how that would do any good though. Who would know your crossing the line? Unless you park on the side of the interstate and get out of the car with your snake and walk across. Now if enough people did that across the country, it would get some media attention..
Take care, Marty
