I have a program like the one Larry wrote about. It may be the same one. It works great without ever touching the snake.

What software are you using?
I found this one:
Analyzing Digital Images Software 2008
Here:
http://mvh.sr.unh.edu/software/software.htm
It does not appear to have a continuous line tool.
You have to use a straight segment, and flip it along.
Each segment length must be recorded before flipping to the next one.
Tedious, but it works pretty well according to my test.

I've always preferred using a tape measure. The easiest method I've found is to hold the end against the snake's head with one hand while sliding the running end of the tape along the snake's body with the other hand down to the tip of the tail and taking the measurements from that. Even if the snake is putting up a bit of a fight, as long as the hand holding the running end has a firm enough grip on the body the measurements are still quite accurate.
I know it's not a squeeze box but the whole procedure is over in seconds and I'm sure the amount of stress would be either comparable or less than other methods mentioned.
Has anyone else tried taking measurements this way?

I tried your suggestion on my Gaboon and he bit me!
(I am typing with my left hand)
I am still interested in exploring the software since it seems a little safer.
Any help appreciated.

69Camaro,
The OP, Rob Carmichael, mentioned that this was for Eastern fox snakes. I didn't think that I needed to stipulate this but here goes: This method is NOT A GOOD IDEA for venomous species.
Sorry about any confusion this may have caused.

My bad!
I thought you were being a wise-guy, sorry about that.
Anyway, I would like to find out what software those other guys used.
This thread was dormant for awhile, perhaps you are the only one subscribed.
Do you think it is a good idea to start a new thread on this topic?
Thanks!

Luke,
Doug Hotle and I, brought up the subject of measuring venomous snakes(following Rob's post), so I can see where he got confused.

Thanks for the "intervention"...
Yes everyone, it is exactly as you see, the other post looked ridiculously stupid to me, so I wise-cracked a reply. In the context of a "venomous reptiles.com" forum discussion...I assumed that the post was a wisecrack.
After that, well, then, I apologized.
I remain curious as to the software that was referred to by:
agkistrodude and
LarryDFishel
I am a serious hot handler.

I found the software that I use regularly by goggling "snake measuring tool". You will find several. Some work better than others, so try a few. Take care, Marty
