Gentlemen.
I appreciate all of the support and sentiments expressed in this thread.
I just ask that we please be careful not to devolve into name calling and personal attacks.
I know that there are a lot of passionate young people out there who do not know who the "old-timers" are in this "profession" and don't realise how much work went into creating the readily available herps that seem to be commonplace in the industry these days. You guys know who you are and I am very pleased that you all still use this site and are willing to share your expertise.
Please allow the new comers to show themselves for who they are without attaching a name or epithet to their lack of recognition of who all made this hobby what it is today.
Again, I appreciate all of your support and understanding.

Karl

Luckily my Toughbook is waterproof or else I would have short-circuited it with the coffee that erupted out when I laughed at that last comment :)

The more an animal costs, the better it is taken care of by its owner. I wouldn't sell any snakes that I've watched hatch and grow for a cheap price even if I could. I would want my animals to be cared for - not purchased on an whim and forgotten in 6 months.
Not to mention the superior quality you'd get from any of Doug's snakes. I'm not saying that because I know doug or have seen his setup... I'm saying it because HE'S A CURATOR OF HERPETOLOGY AT A ZOO!!!
Let's see... 5 years of shady breeding experience VS a curator of herpetology.... definitely an expert.
I used to build with lego when I was a kid, so I guess that makes me an architect.

Luke-
Once again, thank you for the compliment. Although, I do want to travel a bit further down the path of your statement.
I enjoy being a curator very much. The fact that I choose to be a curator means two things-
One, is that I am a glutton for punishment! I make little pay for some demanding work. It also means that I like to work with the big picture as opposed to pieces of it. There are many many many zoo keepers out there that are brilliant when it comes to these animals and simply choose to stay 100% involved with the animals themselves as opposed to taking on the rigors of curatorship. I once tried to convince a keeper to pursue my position as I was leaving the San Antonio Zoo. His reply was classic; he said to me “Doug, I drink beer because I WANT to”!
In the other side of this coin is that, hold on to your hat here…..there are good curators in the profession…and not-so-good ones. This is the same as people in the private sector. Some great, some friggin scary.
I have a great many friends in both the actual profession, as well as in the private sector. Some of my best friends are those that choose to keep a well paying job, and dedicate their free time to the animals. Their set-ups rival that of most zoos. Their knowledge rivals that of most textbooks. Their overall collections would make you drool! This is why I have always been such an advocate for preserving the rights of the private sector. Without these folks, so much positive stuff would be lost.
It is like anything…you get the bad with the good.
The cool thing about the herp realm is that there is a passion and an energy that transcends and dissolves all genders, races, job titles and everything in between -and pulls people together for one focus…these amazing animals.
