hello all!it has been a while since i posted but i have a question, without getting into the arguement of "right or wrong"on what each person thinks about cross breeding,or breeding period.i have a male gabby and a female rhino that i want to breed.they are both beautiful snakes, each close to 4ft. in length, very healthy.i have raised them both from babies(07)for the sole purpose of breeding them as adults.now heres what i know, they breed in the fall months,i have to mimic the rainy season, blah blah blah.what i dont know is the best(safest) way to introduce the two snakes. and also the enclosure they should be introduced in.i would also like to know is a single coupling going to seal the deal?i plan on setting up a camera to catch them in the act so that i am sure mateing has taken place.also what are some signs(other than them killing each other)that i know things are going wrong and i should seperate them pronto.i am sure there are some breeders out there that can answer these questions, and i would be very grateful for any input....thanks,Danny

I can respect your interest in trying to breed these snakes, but recomend not doing it. Get a compatable snake for each. If the funds are not there to do so,than wait tell they are.It is a shame that there is so much cross breeding and morph production it really serves very little value if any at all. Many years ago we desired captive born animals, but now the genetics are so scatterd you can not be sure what you even have anymore. It took many years and alot of hard work to get these animals in the country ,and now to be under attack with silly legislation in front of us at all times .Lets do it right. You will be happy you did.As far as the breeding of larger Bitis make it simple ,always introduce the female into the males cage. House them together for no more than two days ,if nothing happens seperate and repeat it in about a week.Misting is fine but do not over do it, It is better to do this mid to late summer.Keep in mind this, pure animals one day will be well prized, the morphs will either be neglected or let loose on side of the road some where.Do the right thing.Above all do it safely. Good Luck Chris

Cross breeding is a form of evolution and can have benefits to the animal if done correctly. Is also maybe bennefical from a scientiffic stand point. The snake may have a new venom with new properties. There may also be other unknown bennefits. It is very interesting I sugest you do it.

There really is no possitive side to cross breeding. It may happen off and on in the wild in rare ocasionns, but by know means should it become a practice in captivity. And that possibilty of a new venom could also be a venom that is resistent to antivenom. So if we lived in the world of what if,well what if humans would inter breed with yellow monkeys to try and create a strain resistent to hiv. Think about it. Thanks Chris

"Cross breeding is a form of evolution..." <---False
Cross breeding by people for whatever reason is Artificial Selection. Artificial selection has been used for hundreds of years for various reasons and can be a mechanism for evolution. Some of these crosses occur in nature, some are accidental, some are encouraged/pushed for in captivity. While I personally do not agree with crossing organisms who have evolved to the point of speciation on purpose, I stop short of frowning upon those who do.
I simply question the motives behind the desire to cross these animals. A persons reason for wanting to cross organisms can likely be strictly for the pursuit of money. Not always, but certainly often.
I would not mind seeing some debate on this topic if we can all remain civil.

Seriously? Does this fbergman31 guy just go around making uninformed and infalmmatory comments for fun?
CHRIS is right, cross breeding convolutes and errodes the species that nature took millions of years to form (as does venomoiding).
Also, try to see it from the standpoint of conservation. Please keep the gene pools of the species you keep secure - especislly with most natural systems on Earth in decline. It will not only be up to zoos to keep species alive until the Human race sorts itself out. Much of the burden will lie on hobbyists like us to save the species that no one else wants.
Look at the amphibians... they're already disappearing faster than we can learn about them, let alone save them.
