Description: The landscape of Sri Lanka is so inhospitable in places that only elephants can get in to do heavy lifting. Of the roughly 2000 elephants that still live in Sri Lanka, about 300 or so are used as working animals. The mahouts have to care for them 24 hours a day for their entire lives. The wild herds of elephants are considered dangerous to humans due to past conflicts with farmers. Elephants hold grudges! Subsequently, they will kill a human if they catch them alone, including ambushing someone on a bicycle on a jungle road - an actual story.
