Toxicity and Evolution
|
I love all aspects of these animals, but I would have to say that the Toxicity and Evolution of these organisms are the most interesting to me professionally. Beauty, challenge and danger appeal to my personal hobby interests.

To me there is no animal more perfectly evolved to its needs then a venomous snake. It has en effective defense mechanism. Requires very little food, and can survive in some of the harshest enviroments in this world. As the only member of my family to like snakes, the fact they keep the relatives from dropping in unnannounced only cements my love for them. These are truly remarkable creatures.

Why?
|
Why are venomous reptiles so maligned? I find that single question to be the most fascinating. Its not just that they are feared, or all people would run away at the sight of one. Some people intentionally seek them out, appearing to enjoy killing. Others just kill them because its what they were taught to do with venomous snakes, though many times they accidentally kill non-venomous species in the process. When given an option, these people, many times, would prefer to see the animal not killed. And there are yet other people who will seek out hots to learn more about them and who promote understanding of venomous reptiles among people in an attempt to erase the ignorance that threatens not only venomous reptiles but so many other species, including ourselves.
Hots are fascinating in so many ways, but how mankind interacts with them is very revealing about our nature. Each group represents an aspect of humanity. The fear and aggression. The curiosity and understanding

My eyelash vipers are truly fascinating. I love to watch them explore their surroundings after the lights are out. My sand vipers don't do much, but they are beautiful. However, the eyelash vipers are amazing in every way.

What fascinates me the about venomous reptiles is just about everything about them but most of all the evolution story of snakes back from when they had hind limbs to present day snakes . Also the behaviour and toxicology.

I think these animals are fascinating from an evolutionary standpoint. They are a huge success story. What other land animal has no appendages like arms or legs, and has become so highly specialized in how they survive? Particularly the development of venom and a method to introduce it into it's prey. These guys have been around for quite some time and are continuing to do the best they can to keep pumping out more generations. Who knows what adaptations lie ahead for snakes. All snakes kick @$$, but I think that venomous are particularly spectacular.

Keeping reasons
|
It would be truly hard to give one single reason for keeping Venomous Reptiles. I think that behavior, beauty, and a absolute fascination about the lives and habits of these creatures are my main reasons. I know that a few keepers in our hobby keep for the fear and loathing that has been around for so many years. Regrettably, some people keep these beautiful creatures to show off to their friends like some kind of toy............. Happy herping, be safe ya’ll Wally

What aspect of keeping venomous reptiles fascinates you the most?

Conservation. The opportunity to further knowlege of responsible care and reproductive husbandry. Many of these animals face extinction in the near future do to rapid habitat destruction and ignorant cultural bias. Some species may not continue to exsist outside of captive breeding projects.

Beauty

I just recently purchased 2 female baby gaboons. I fed them today, and only 1 of them ate. It is the beauty and the fasination these animals carry that make me want to learn and keep them.

Other/all...
|
People ask me this question all the time, and I'm not sure I really know why I like them. Part of it is doing something that few others do. I think part of it is just that I feel for the "misunderstood" creatures, and few things are more misunderstood than venomous reptiles (although snakes in genereal are probably next on the list). Of couse they are fascinating creatures in thier own right, but I guess this is why I choose them over all the other fascinating creatures (and there are MANY)...

Toxicity
|
Before I even kept any venomous my fascination was with the clinical side of snake bite which started about 5yrs ago, I suppose initialy this would come under Toxicity. But after having my own collection over the past 16mths all the above comes into play.

For me it is all of those things. They are just so much different than non-venomous. It is impossible to choose just one.

What aspect of keeping venomous reptiles fascinates you the most?

What fascinates me the most about venomous snakes is how specialized their are. They live a slow simple life with flashes of lightning. Time means nothing.
