Corwin...
|
He seems to be the most humorous person who remains fairly well educated on the subject of reptiles, and while O'Shea has more experience, along with many others, Corwin just seems more fun

I would probably take Rob Bredl along because he has a great knowledge of reptiles from around the world and 2nd because he would know how to survive if we got stranded

Some Insight
|
I personally know 4 of the people on this list. None of them act quite the same when the cameras aren't rolling. They are all intelligent and witty, and generally great fun to be around when they are just being themselves. I would consider all of them to be an asset on such a trip.

The survey doesn't specify why you choose who you choose. On the contrary, the survey tells us what is most important to the people within this community -- knowledge or personality. If knowledge is most important to you, then choose accordingly, and vice versa.

Just curious, but will Dr. Fry's wife be joining us? If so then I will opt for B.G.F.

Well I've never seen Fry anywhere near real rough country like the Amazon - he always seems to be on huge boats, but O'Shea would certainly has the bushcraft and experience in South America to make for an awesome trip.

Jeff Corwin
|
I have traveled the world and been herping for 34 years. Jeff corwin is an ASTOUNDING walking encyclopaedia, but so is Oshea, and I have found that in a long stretch in nasty conditions there are 2 things that really really keep you sane. A really hot female or a very funny guy. No one on the list is funny but Corwin; he's frickin' hilarious. I've never heard O'shea or Irwin say a single witty thing in 5 straight years. Not one. Steve Irwin is funny to laugh AT; he's not trying to be funny, he's just a mutant.

I personally would go with Fry. I think he is one of the world's foremost experts on venom research. He may not be as flamboyant- natured as the other "contestants", but this site is VENOMOUSreptiles.org! I am fascinated with venom/toxins and if you really want to learn something new, go with Fry!

Hard to pick only one. While I went with O'Shea, I'm surprised more people haven't voted for Bredl.

The best guide
|
All are good professionals, but has one that gets the attention of the Brazilians.
In my opinion the best guide is O'Shea
Him conhece very well that area.
Then he is the most qualified among all,
Besides the Brazilian people have a lot of affection for the O'Shea.

The big picture...
|
Each one of the personalities listed has his own strengths and weaknesses. This survey only highlights who would be best for this particular task, and what the interests/goals of the surveyees are. For instance, if I was taking a trip across the Australian outback, I would probably make another choice. If I wanted a tour of the seasnakes of the world, again, I would make a different choice. Etc, etc, etc.
Just for the heck of it, I may post a different survey question with the same names listed.

TV
|
I do wonder if it is fair to pit these personalities against each other, for the simple reason that they all have something different to offer in terms of educating the general public about the fascinating world of reptiles (and amphibians).
I know what goes into producing a program and do have respect for all of these guys but I would like to point out that we sometimes forget those other Herpetologists that may not be in the limelight or as well known (at least by the general public), but also add a great deal to the herp community.
Armata states that he “would choose Mark because he listens to the advice of an old snakeman like me”, What might not be known is that this old snakeman is very well respected by those that know him. He is an “Expert” in his own right, having worked with large public venomous collections both here (UK) and South Africa. He has published papers/books and at least one title that will have been read by many with an interest in venomous snakes. I, for one clearly remember 20 odd years ago reading the sections on venom extraction with keen interest…..especially now as I do it for a living!
Tony is also an accomplished photographer and camera guy who, shot much of the footage seen in Mark’s “Black Mamba” program.
There are of course plenty of other examples of men and women who contribute to our knowledge, either with or without appearing on TV.

I would have to pick Rob Bredl, one because he seems like a pretty cool guy with a good knowledge of reptiles, and two, because if we got stranded in the middle of nowhere, he'd be able to keep us alive with his in-human survival skills.
Corwin and O'shea would come in a close second and third.
For seasnakes Dr. Fry would definately be my pick.

That is a tough one. I have always wanted to see a sea snake or kraite in the wild and Dr. Fry would probably best suited for that trip. Joseph Slowinsky was my favorite, but is not mentioned for obvious reasons. Any other terrain and the modern pioneer, S Erwin would be my choice.

Who to choose?

It depends on what you are looking for in a guide. I'd personally go for the individual that I think knows most about the herps from that region.

More insight: My original intent was that this trip will be a private trip for you personally, and there will be no TV cameras. The person is to act as your personal guide.

Survey
|
I have not voted because there are quite a few possible answers depending upon the reason for taking one of these guys along with you.
· There are several in the list that I count as friends so do I choose one of them?
· Do I select someone that I have not met (but would like to)?
· Do I choose on the basis of actual field experience working in the Amazon?
· Some of these presenters are just the same in real life as they are on TV, while others are totally different.
· A month long trip can be great… but what if you get on each others nerves?
· Who is the least accident-prone / best able to cope with an emergency situation?
· How well do you work as a team?
· How well would you cope with constantly being in the shadow of the great Mr. (whoever) from, when they are mobbed by people?
· How good is their Spanish / Portuguese?
As you can see there is plenty to think about! I would say that it would be best to do such a trip away from the glare of the TV camera.
