Do you keep venomous?
|
I do not have any venomous snakes, However I do have a nice collection of Glia Monster both Reticulated and Banded. I also have a few Beaded lizards(Exasperatum). These are excellent animals to learn precautionary procedures with but should never be underestimated or taken lightly! If anyone reads this and wants to talk lizards drop me an email.

opistoglyphs are nice especially MALPOLON!!!
|
I've only got rear-fangs at the moment. I've got around 60 snakes that are all (exept a few opistoglyphs) completely non-venomous. Their are many interesting non-venomous snakes. But many venomous species are interesting and beatifull. I'm interested in Vipera russeli for example, Sistrurus sp. Atheris is nice, Heloderma (lizard), and the little coralcobra's Aspidelaps. I hope that soon it will be legal for me to keep them.

Only venomous, it's a total differant ball game to keeping non-venomous colubrids. I obtained my first snake right at the age of 11 a little baby Black(Dendroaspis Polylepis). I had caught it in the back yard(Durban-South Africa-my home town) not knowing the impact of the snakes venom or on what it will feed on i slipped it into a fish tank and tried feeding it mice like all my friends would do with their corn snakes. Only to discover weeks later that the very nervous youngster would only feed on brick geckoes. I went out cathing a few and slipped the first one in, the snake struck immediatly killing the geckoe within a few seconds. I was stunned, this was for me!. The next week I recieved my first pair of hatchling Boomslangs(Dispholidus Typus)Sky Blue and Yellow speckled, screamers. Then the following a pair of W.greens(Dendroaspis Viridis) and so it went on every little cent I had went into snakes. I now have a 158 snakes to my name ALL VENOMOUS, all Asian vipers(Trimeresurus), All African Elapids (Naja, Dendroaspis, Aspidelaps, Hemachatus etc)All African vipers(Bitis, Cerastes, Causus etc Most of the Austraian and New Guinea elapis(Oxyuranus, Micropechis, Pseudonaja etc. I also keep a few Copper heads, Cantils, and pygmey's. I am now working on my Rattlesnake collection I desperately looking for Canebrakes and Aruba Island. So if you are at all intersted in maybe exporting to S.A. please e-mail me at rexaylward@worldonline.co.za.
enjoy th herping

Venomous Snakes

I don't often keep venomous reptiles for more than a couple weeks. Me and my best friend catch many Copperheads and Cottonmouths, occasionally getting a hold of corals. It is an awesome hobby. We keep all of our reptiles while we photograph and release. It is just an awesome feeling to find a 5 foot Cottonmouth without tongs, hook, or bag. It is so fun to freehand stuff.

Do You Keep Venomous?
|
Not yet. I'm still looking into White lipped vipers, Rain Forest vipers (B. bilineata), and various morphs of Atheris vipers. I keep 3 Brazillian Rainbows, a hog-nose (if that counts as any sort of venomous snake), & an Emerald Tree Boa.

I Love Snake!! I don't mess with venomous, and my husband
doesn't like reptiles and won't let me have one. I prefer
constrictors. They're better mannered and easier to handle.

i've been keeping herps for close to 8 years now, 3 of which i have worked as a keeper at a reptile zoo. i don't keep anything hot at home, mostly because i am 18 and still live with my family (including 10 year old brother). At work i am currently learning how to handle hots, heloderms, atheris, small rattlesnakes. I love working with hots, and i completely understand why people choose to keep them in ther homes, however unfortueatly i have met and heard about individuals whom do not share my views on safety when concerning theese animals (some are stupid with handling, some keep the animals in a home with small children...ect). so in reality i believe some people should keep hots and others should keep goldfish, it all has to be about the individual and the location of the animals.

Keeping Hots
|
I have been keeping hots stuff for over 20 years here in Florida. The majority of the animals were cobras of all kinds and rattlesnakes with the postage stamp gaboon, mangrove snake or arboreal viper. During th past five years or so I have settled on the native Florida hot stuf, especially rattlesnakes and a few bitis vipers with some no venomous animals to use in snake education talks (over 25-30/year). Currently I'm on the Florida Antivenin Bank Board of Directors. If you don presently belong, please join. It's cheap insurance, just in case. Steve McDaniel

Keeping Venemous?
|
I operate a "free" animal relocation service in Alabama in my spare time. People call me when they have a problem animal (i.e. snake in the laundry room, racoon in the basement). (Herps will always be my favorite). There are numerous remote locations where i can, and choose to, release these animals back into the wild away from people. I have been handling "Hots" for some 15 years. I have kept them before, and may again in the future but right now I am content with admiring their beauty, photographing them and watching them go free.

Hots and Nonhots
|
I have been keeping venomous snakes since 1976. I have kept, at various times, Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes, Timber Rattlesnakes (from the Blue Ridge area of Virginia), Canebrake Rattlesnakes (Virginia Beach and Suffolk, Virginia and Georgia), Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnakes (Georgia), Eastern and Florida Cottonmouths and on one occasion an Eastern Coral Snake. I also keep a variety of western subspecies of King Snakes and a Colombian Rainbow Boa. Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnakes are still my favorites.

I am actually a beginner at keeping snakes.I have know had my corn for a month now. Even thogh I am a begginer and do not own any hot snakes, I still love to read and learn about them. One of the primary species is the rattlesnake in which I own 3 very thick books on and read them all the time. After a couple of years of owning nonvenomous snakes and breeding them I think I might try to own a hot snake.

Do you Keep venomous, yes or no?
|
Well i used to.
I kept nonvens for eighteen yrs then vens for five yrs.
I chose to give it up because i was changing as a person.
I still believe people have the right to keep if they so wish and i have nothing against anyone who does.
I now prefer field study , as i believe it was seeing a snake in its natural environment that used to give me a buzz.
Once i'd kept a herp for a certain period of time it would still look absolutely fantastic, but somehow not as impressive as a wild herp.
I visit these sites and forums to chat with the good friends i have made here and to keep without keeping ,if you know what i mean.
