We build our own tanks for many reasons. For the sizes that we have it is much more cost effective. Our largest tank holds our 11 1/2 burmese python, and it is 8'wide X 4'deep X 4'high. To buy a tank that size we would spend a fortune. Our typical size for tanks is 4'X 2'X 2'. Those are great for the larger bodied Crotalus and Bitis. For the smaller snakes we build accordingly. And we also use 10 gallon fish tanks for our young or very small animals, with custom lids, made of hardware cloth. We spend a couple hundred a month to feed, so we have to save as much $$ a month as possible. The only disadvantage to custom built lumber & plexie tanks is that they are difficult to sterlize, and clean due to size. My solution... while the tank is empty and has already been scubbed out and cleaned as best as possible, I keep alcohol in a spray bottle and spray the entire surface and every nuk-n-cranny, and allow enough time for it to dry. It is a very cost efficient system and method. I believe that the only tank we have that was purchased other than the fish tanks, is a small Neodesha or Vision, slant tank, that we acquired from a friend at the zoo.

Comercial ones don't give you the sapce you may want. Commercial cages are so ugly, too. ;-)

No one makes a line of cages that suits the venomous collection on a breeding level to cover the broad. With the diversity of animals I work with and breed,I need fixed basking sites, permanent ventilation in the right places, display lights, etc.Especially the specialty animals that require almost bedroom sized enclosures (ie. Lachesis, large Bitis and I've even got cloud forest arboreal pit-vipers that have their own rooms),of course right now only a handful of us,maybe a little more, are breeding on a "big, scary animal" scale right now.But hey, that's just me,There are some really nice enclosures out there.Brook Berntson

Rubbermaids mostly
|
my hot building has a mix, some neodeshas, some custom plywood/melamine/plexiglass creations, but the majority are rubbermaid racks.
Worthless for display but if the rack is built properly, they are escape proof.
For display animals, I custom build the cage to fit the room and the animal, usually 3/4" plywood and tempered glass are the basics.

Aquariums, oh my!
|
I have previously posted about my altered aquariums. Fortunately my system will work with any size of commercial aquarium and I am currently upgrading a 55 gallon aquarium to be a community tank for Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnakes. I have heard the comments about aquarium glass breaking but with the re-enforced corners, bottom and top that I give them, they are very safe and sturdy.

In my opinion, the best cage for venomous species. If only the racks wouldn't be so pricey!

cages for hots
|
The best you can get is what you make yourself.
Every enclosure I make is designed for the specific need of my snakes, not to mention myself!
Some commercially available cages come close, but personally I think none are actually made to hold venomous animals.
Every species of snake should have a different desing of cage, whether it's a cornsnake, python, cobra or aboreal pitviper.
It's just safer to build your own

Aquarium Usage
|
I use an extra tall, "in-the-corner" 45 gal aquarium for my newly acquired neonate spectacled cobra. The cage is tall enough that there is no way she can reach the top at this time, and like vettesherps said, I like to be able to come at my snakes from the top. It gives me leverage on them, rather than letting them be "equal" with me and just shooting out of a front-opening cage. I would definitely not be comfortable opening a neodesha containing a neonate cobra or some other quick elapid and compromising the entire cage like that.

Venomous caging.
|
I purchased my newest cages from Habitat Systems. I`ve known Tom Widner for twenty plus years. He does great work and will build
to my specs.
This is not an endorsment!
He just builds `em better then I could.
And he aint cheap.

All glass aquariums
|
I currently have all my venomous in top opening glass aquariums. All the hots I keep are basically vipers and feel much more comortable going in from the top with my hook. Front opening cages seem to give the snake a better chance of tagging you. Please note my largest venomous snake at the present time is only 3 feet. I have considered vision but felt that with out some adaptations they would not secure a small snake.

I prefer to build my own.For the reason I know ever inch of the cage will be escape
proof. I have an 4'by 2' I've got my EDB in
for alittle over an year. And no escapes what so ever.

i can make my cages cheaper than i can buy them and i can make it as secure as i want it. i know the rep. is not getting out. i have found it to be safer for me and better for the snakes because i can build the cage to meet or exceed their needs.

Aquarium adaptations
|
I use regual aquariums with custom made locking lids. Similar to Buzztail's design except mine are hinged. For larger snakes I use neodesha's with tempered glass. I don't like to use front opening tanks because the snakes can "walk" right out.

I think are better cages, because the one who´s building, is learning at the same time. Life is a school, never stop learning.
And in this way, you can make a cage especifically for the species you keep, in stores not always have an especific cage for an especific snake.
Keep on' herping.

My Cage Designs
|
I found it easier to build what I needed to fit my personal safety specs, rather than buy. Besides, I haven't found any top opening (my preference for viperids) cages available on the market. And personally, I think my cages are safer than any that I've ever seen anywhere else.
