Well, if you total your car and survive your hospital stay, do you quit driving? Probably not.
I would continue to keep my venomous snakes.
If you live through a mistake, you should learn something from it. Maybe the lesson learned is that you, as an individual, are not really cut out for keeping venomous. If you quit keeping because you feel that is the lesson you learned, then so be it. I have been keeping long enough to know that it is not just a fad or something neat for me. It is a live and breath part of my life that I miss dearly every time I have to go back to sea.
If I ever get bitten and do time (in a hospital) it will be because I made a mistake. I will work on figuring out how not to make that mistake again and it will make me a better keeper.
I don't think there is a wrong answer to this question as long as the snake isn't "punished" for being a snake. That would be tragic.
I have an immense amount of respect for those people who put that their decision depends on what their spouse says. I put "Yes, I would continue to keep." but, of course, only after I asked The Boss ;-)
Just my opinion,

I don't own any venomous snakes yet but I have dealt with them. I've been nicked by a copperhead and had a close call with a Timber Rattlesnake in the wild. I still love going out and looking for them although when I do see them I'm a little more careful about what I'm doing. The nick was just plain luck. I decided to play a cool guy when I had one of my friends with me and picked up the young copperhead by the tail. Entirely my fault, but lesson learned.

I would definitely continue...
|
If I was to be bitten by one of my venomous snakes, I would most definitely continue keeping them. This is due to the fact that I KNOW this is ALWAYS a possibility while dealing with these magnificent animals. I think that I might even admire them more after experiencing first hand the power that these creatures actually hold!

Keeping them is a chance you take
|
I knew I was taking a chance when I started caring for venomous reptiles. I have taken a hit from a C.v.oreganus but it was my lucky day and it was a dry bite. I remember though that the time spent waiting for the venom to take affect the thing I thought of most was that I couldn't be down too long because my animals only had me to care for them. I have been working with venomous for 30+ years and have had 2 wives and a dozen girl friends..... I still have the snakes.....

Been there, done that, and didn't even get a lousey tee shirt. The snake was a large C. adamanteus. Right hand.
I still see no reason not to keep.

Yeah I would.

I would still keep them if i was bitten. As long as there was no problem with me being alergic to horse protiens from the treatment. If I was told I could never be administered antivenom again after a serious envenomation I wouldnt keep venomous snakes any more.

Could Go Either Way.

I dont care if I BARELY live from a bite, I can pretty much guarentee to myself that I would still keep venomous.
As far as the spouse thing, you really have to look at the situation. Your not stopping just because they say to, its that they fear for your life. If they wish you to stop that bad, and it is out of love, and not disrespect towards the animal, than maybe quitting (as hard as it may be) is a viable option.
By putting yourself in the hospital, you are definitely hurting more than just yourself, your hurting your loved ones and friends everytime it happens with the thought that you may not come back.
I cant say I would be very willing to give up my hots because my girlfriend said so, but if it meant that much to her, I feel that I would have to consider it.
Sorry if I'm being a little soft, but there are just certain people its worth doing it for....

Risk of the job
|
I have had several bad bites requiring large amounts of antivenom. I personally see bites as an occupational hazard of my daily work. I have probably done in excess of half a million handlings (for cleaning, feeding & venom extraction). The number of bites that I have had is very low given the amount of interaction that I have with these snakes (I do know of people who have had over 30 bites with only a faction of the time I,ve spent with venomous).
There is nothing else that I can think of that can put you in intensive care, from which you can recover so quickly as from a snake-bite.
For the people who say to me “don’t you think that your job is dangerous”, I normally point out the window (I’m on the 3 floor) and say “if your working on a building like that and fall, your in a wooden box or a wheelchair at best ! at least with a snake-bite there is the chance of making a full recovery”.

Couldn't

If I were to be bitten and had to go to the hospital that would pretty much force me out of keeping them. I live in a city where they are not allowed, but it is not enforced unless it is felt there is a need. I have even been told by local authorities that a bite from a venomous snake would result in my having to get rid of all my snakes (venomous and not). I guess for me it is a matter of doing everything I can to avoid it.
I also think my girlfriend would force me out of keeping them. She loves them but is constantly worried that I will do something wrong and get bit. Sure hope she is wrong.

If I kept hots, probably.

Truth is I don't keep them permanently. I had a awesome canebrake two weeks ago. Got a nice Pygmy right now which I intend to release tomorrow. I usually keep them for a week or less just to watch them and take numerous photos both in the cage and in their natural settings upon release. I know that if I were to be bitten while catching and studying them I would still do so.

Of course

I do still keep hot herps. I have just recieved my hospital bill which was due to a bad bite by a ngiht adder (causus rhombeatus) which almost cost me my hand. My mates came up with the nick name SLANGBYT for me, which is Africaans for SNAKEBITE, as a result. Like other people have said, it was not the snakes fault, it was my handling error.

My guy and I would both keep venonmous after being bitten. We love them. I mean, I would keep my child if she slammed me upside the head with a toy golf club. :) heh heh , but on a serious note...I HAVE learned a lot in the snake world and respect them and their quickness a great deal. What beautiful animals they are.

THIS IS IRONIC
|
I WAS JUST BITTEN BY MY OWN COTTONMOUTH THE DAY BEFORE YESTERDAY, AND WAS JUST RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL ABOUT AN HOUR AGO. THE FIRST THING I DID WHEN I GOT HOME WAS TO CHECK ON MY BABY AND MAKE SURE HE WAS OK. THE BITE WAS TOTALLY MY FAULT, SO I DON'T BLAME HIM. HERE'S SOME ADVICE: NEVER TAIL A SNAKE IN SHED. THE BITE WAS PAINFUL, HOWEVER, IT WAS FAR FROM THE MOST PAINFUL THING I'VE EVER BEEN THROUGH. I WAS HIT WITH ONLY ONE FANG, AND MY ARM SWELLED TO THE SIZE OF GOD. NO FASCIOTOMY NEEDED THOUGH, SO IT'S ALL GOOD UNTIL I GET THE DAMN BILL IN. BE SAFE OUT THERE GUYS, BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH I GOT LUCKY, IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE.

OH YEAH

As stated prior, snakes are not at fault. If you get tagged, maybe reconsidering you handling techniques is what you should do, not blame the animal.

My girlfriend is O.K. with it, she's also gaining expierience in handling hots, with my supervision.
I would still be allowed to keep them, and like wls967 says, it is not the snakes'fault you got bitten..

Absolutely!

Whatever the circumstance, I can guarantee it would not be the fault of the snake. I would, however, pay closer attention to where I placed my digits and other appendages.
