it's happening now.....not state laws, but landlord laws...i'm state compliant, but i've been politely asked to get rid of my rattlers (only snakes i have right now), so i'll do it....i'm sure i could fight it and win rather easily, but to keep a good relationship with her, i'll just do it. there are worse things in life and i'm not out of the "game" altogether anyway...just temporarily....still sucks though :(

Keep your snakes
|
I think that if you know the dangers of keeping venomous herps then its you fault if you ignore them and subsequently get bitten. Besides there are animals that have no venom what-so-ever that are kept as exotic pets, take a Boa for instence I kept some for a short while and when they are fully grown they are just as dangerous and no-one minds if you keep them. There are thousands of things that can kill us that we don't ban, trying and new food for the first time can kill yuo on the spot if you have an allergy life isn't safe so if people think taey know and can prove they know how to keep these animals then let the.

It hurts my feelings that they are even considering the unthinkable. It's like Children's Services coming to take your children right from underneath your nose! So to speak... Be "parents" and step up and fight. Especially for those of us who use University permits to do good in Science and Econo-Recovery research. But the ones I keep at home with me have curled their cute rattler's around my heart. :o) harhar...

Fire thats a good one, we might as well throw invert and monitor and python people into the group as well. Arent there animals going to escape too? who wants the deathstalkers and 15ft burms cruisin through the neighborhood? And personally, for this trick question, the best answer would be to leave them and hope they survive (which is capable in horridus and many se US species pending the fire doesnt inter the room, certain crots have there land burned every other year) or burn up, unfortunately. And this law thing? HHHHHmmmm, lets see, wasnt it a LAW in Germany to turn over all jews in internment camps, and wasnt it a LAW in the US that slaves were personal property? and wansnt it a law in 18th century Britian that you could be quartered in public squares. Cmon, for some of us this isnt a part time hobby we fell into out of boredom, my snakes are an aspect of my life that will always be there law or not. And the survey demostrates that seems to be the general consciences in one aspect or another. Being 75% would still keep them. The problem isnt only in the keepers, it also in UNIFORMED F&G officials trying to reach biased quotas and getting better promotions. Mans law and Gods law are 2 very different things. I have no problem in having any wildlife official come by, they are more than welcome but I dont think you can just say NO you cant keep this unless you work for US! Thats BS if you keep your animals in a proper manner (again I am not at all against permit systems, unless they sky rocket whereas only the very wealthy can purchase them) you should have no problem will other members of the community DNR, F&G or not. Personally, several of the police in my town know I keep venomous snakes, thus I help them when they may need identification, or dont wanna kill the copperhead in someones yard. Just my rant on the manner,
Jared

BONUS - Unofficial Survey Question.
|
You awake to find your house/apartment on fire. There is just enough time to gather some things. (Although we all know in reality, you just get the hell out - empty handed!)
Do you A :
Wake the wife up, then spend the last few moments of your life pondering on whether to take the cat, or the jewellery her Mother left her.
Do you B :
Not bother to wake her, but race down the stairs with the grabstick you keep by the bed - (her idea, in-case anything gets "loose"),throw as much snakes as you can into a muslin bag, then dive out the window.
Oh, and then shout the wife from the bottom of the garden, but not before making sure that the snakes were safely secured in a strong container, (seperated and re-labled, preferably in alphabetical order, complete with Latin names - well, if you're going to do something, you may as well do it RIGHT!...)
Yeah you're right....it's a tricky one....

Yeah, ok, but.........

You are all possibly phoning far and wide seeing if your covered for a bite. That's fair enough...But the point I was trying to get across is " would you still be covered IF, and it is still an "IF", the keeping of venomous herps was made illegal? I dunno about over here, in Scotland, where the only thing that stands a chance of biting me on a regular basis, is the bloody midge.
And, just to throw in my two cents worth, as far as would I pay the higher licence fee, if I wanted to carry on keeping the biting brigade, then YES. A hundred bucks is only around £70 or £80 Stirling. It's not much, so I don't see the problem.
Anyhoo - If theres anything else that you think will get me temperature up, feel free to comment. And to the folk that would just "and and move...", are you willing to up sticks, every time the law catches up with the state that you're in? Don't make sense to me. What are you going to do IF every state in the U.S, bans the private individual from keeping venemoids? Move to France, or Africa, or Australia ???
Would you not look around for reptile related work in your area, so's you can still legally handle them?
My gripe here is done.....
" Yoinks, and away...!!!!

just a note...
|
it seems that it is a prevalent notion that healthcare coverage (most) doesn't cover bites from venomous reptiles, esp. if their being kept as "pets". To the best of my knowledge, and limited amount of research, this is completely unfounded. It's not true in my case (i asked), nor in the case of some folks I know who were bitten & who had med. insurance. After all...would your insurance pay for a suicide attempt?? It doesn't get more deliberate than that.
I'm not trying to encourage people to get bitten because the dr. bills are paid for, just to clear the water on a muddy subject.

Ignore the Law? Can't be very commited then!.,
|
Ok guys (and Guy-esses), I see from the survey that not many of you are willing to fight the legislation if it were to rear its' head (sic). You seem to be more concerned with ignoring the laws, keeping venemoids illegaly, and possibly have a detrimental effect on us honest folk. Don't spoil it for others, just 'cos you can't be arsed to campain in some way, and try and change the opinions of the totally ignorant.
Besides - Think of the long term consequences in keeping quite about what you've got...If you get tagged, then not only a huge hospital bill (which your health cover would not apply). Then possibly another humdinger of a prosecution into the bargain ! - It's your choosing.
Don't show your irresponsibility BEFORE things take effect, 'cos in my view, you can't be much of a dedicated herp keeper to start with...So, put that in your smoke and pipe it

easy on the pits
|
i would lay low and be discrete, which probally be hard to do considering i have a nys license. so i would end up moving as soon as possible. also as far as the pit bull comment, true purebred american pit bull terriers are not human aggressive. i cannot believe a venomous keeper would make a statement like that. this is the mindset that causes the enaction of bsl laws that effect dog keepers and venomous reptile keepers. i used to own a pit and now i have presa/dogo canarios. they are both great breeds of dogs. pit bulls have to be trained to be human aggressive ethier directly or indirectly, or they are crossbred and not pure pits.

Just lay low
|
I would just lay low and keep my venomous. My view point is if citizen John Doe has the legal right to have a pit bull a dog that can kill or cause injury. I have a equal legal right to have venomous. I would fight the law as well.

interesting...
|
...that most of the people would keep on keeping their venomous reptiles. I may be inclined to do so depending on what the penalty is. I initially voted to fight the legislature, but if the penalty isn't very severe I would keep discretely and bug legislature.

Hey Karl, the foothills of South Carolina
|
are a wonderful place to live. I lived there for 20 years and my parents still live there. I'm moving to Georgia later this year and will only be an hour from them. I only have 40 reasons for not going all the way back to SC. 37 acres + 2 bedrooms + 1 roof + $0 RENT.

I would move!
As my retirement approaches, The Boss and I are considering moving to another more herp-keeper friendly state. For the time being, we meet all state laws and will continue to do so. But as we look for places to retire, herp laws are at the top of our considerations.
