My first hot(Love Affair)
|
My first hot was a gorgeous Crotalus Horridus caught in the mountains of Vesuvius Virginia. She was a beautiful golden specimen. When I brought her to the Lab (Herp Heaven, so nicknamed), we placed her in her own cage. Not long after my return, I located the Biologist in charge, who quickly wanted to examine her and test her potency. In the lab, we had 2 huge rats (owned by one of the other biologists for testing purposes). She was summonded to the lab and quickly placed one of the rats in the cage. One quick jab later and the rat was convulsing and succombed to it's venomous experience. My 14 year age had no idea that, later I would be housing these beautiful animals. When Jody (that Biologist in charge), examined the rat later, we found so much internal bleeding and the smell was so overwhelming that everyone in camp was told to be alert when we made our daily trips out and about looking for Birds, Insects, Herps, Trees, Lichings...the works.
Needless to say, this camp was all about the advanced studies of Nature. Everyone wanted to be in the Herp class, I on the other hand chose Entemology. Why today, I am involved so deeply in hot herps, goes back to that one Lab experience that made me fall in Love.

First Venomous Snake
|
My first venomous snake was a Southern Copperhead in Louisiana; I caught it when I was about 10 years old. On the first day of 7th grade, I got home off of the bus, looked in the cage, and saw a baby still in its embryo sac. It had 12 babies all together. I got bit about 7 times, but nothing really happened; my temperature went up to about 99, but that was it. Eventually my step-dad and I released the babies and their mother into the woods by the Mississippi River.

First Hot
|
My fist hot was a 3 ft Western Rattlesnake that I caught from one of my friends back yard. At first I thought it was a male because I still didn't probe her. At first I thought "he" was just fat but then about a week later she had 14 babies, when I wokeup one morning. I thought it was a male because it was later October and I never thought females had babies that late in the year and I couldn't go and let them go because it snow pretty bad for the week after, so I had to wait to let most of them go until mid march. That was when I was 17. What a fun time!

First hot was a green copperhead given to me by someone I look up to, and am forever grateful for giving me the best animal to start with. She's a real sweetie. Then I moved on to a pygmy, so I'd say I started off pretty light, and it's been good for "training".

My first was an 4' E. Diamondback (C. adamanteus). I caught it when I was 13. My mother let it the house -- my step father, realizing what I had, while I was at school, he took it to Ross Allen's Wildlife Park (Shell Factoey branch in N. Ft. Myers, FL) while I was at school.

worlds dangerous snake
|
well if you take all the parameters in consideration i would say the boomslang because its venom works slowly but deadly, its good camouflaged and its fast when striking. other candidates offcourse the taipan (O. microlepidotus)because its poison is the strongest. An other is the Black Mamba because its the fastest snake and its very good at hiding itself.

My first hot was a southern copperhead. He was a pretty aggressive snake, so he did teach me about the temperment and possiability of being tagged at an early stage. The other hot was a cottonmouth. He was alot more aggressive, would not ride a hook, so I had to use tongs. That snake would release a musk that would smell up a room.

My first was the White Lipped Tree Viper. Not the easiest when it comes to feeding or drinking time, but extremely docile. I always handle it with a hook. Have never had the need to pin it or touch it. The first hot I handled was the Cape Cobra, being from SA.

hots
|
I have been wanting to keep hots for years but with all the laws in NY and now this new Reptile Ban its pretty much impossible. I know people in NY that have been keeping hots and hundreds of other herps for over 50 years and may not be able to keep their herps with the new laws and they use their animals for educational reasons. NY really sucks.

My first hot was an Osage Copperhead that I caught on a bike ride and carried home in an empty water bottle. I was thirteen. I had a room full of cages already, so my mom didn't notice, but as soon as my dad got back from Europe I had to tell him. That was the end of it. The snake now happily lives free underneath my old porch in St. Joseph, MO.

Mine was Vipera berus. A friend I knew from work gave me two specimens he had found as a 'gift'. He knew I had snakes and had told him I was going to get into the venomous part of the hobby, so it was a nice gesture :)
At the time I was living with my parents, and having snakes in my room didn't come easy to begin with. Naturally venomous were out of the question, so it was a happy event when they finally found out I had succeeded in smuggling and keeping hots in their home...

My first venomous snake was caught by accident while mushroom hunting. My friends dad picked it up somewhere in the process of getting mushrooms and it somehow got in the bag. He is so lucky he didn't get bitten, but since I am the only person in town who deals with snakes, he brought it to me and we released it 3 days later in a state park.

My first hot SNAKES were 1:0 West African Gaboon Viper (Bitis gabonica) and 1:0 Rhinoceros Viper (Bitis nasicornis), which I bought together at the same time.
Generally speaking these are NOT good starter hots for most (anyone?), but I knew I was ready... and I was.

First Hot
|
My first Hot was a (Agkistrodon contortrix) Copperhead, I was only about 16 years old at the time, I know that is way to young to be keeping Hots. I kept him/her for about 2 years then released it back to the place I found it, after doing that I realized that I should have just kept it, instead of releasing it, I think I probably made a mistake letting it go after so long in captivity. I like to think that he/she is doing ok, but I have my doubts on it. When I found the Snake, it was not in the best of shape, it was skinny and not what you would consider the normal Copperhead, so that was the main reason I kept it. I nursed him/her back to health. When I found the Snake it was only 1 ½ ft long, but by the time I let it go, it was over 3 ft. long, I consider that a good record on growth.........Be safe ya’ll, Wally
