I agree w/Snakeman1982. I have always heard that hognose were mildly venomous. Now I know. At least some child did not get bit and the whole thing get overly publicized. I think many good things may come of this.

To follow in the footsteps of 2 people I agree with, I say that this is not done by some idiot who cant wipe his ass because he doesnt know where it is. I say this guy saw an opportunity to actually document something to disspell any question as to whether the snakes venom is "harmless" to humans. Not concerned about serious injury, I commend the guy for stepping up to the plate in the name of science. As has been stated before......I wasnt sure, but now I know. Now I can say with confidence "well, a bite most likely wont kill you, but it's not a pleasant thing, and it could have considerable effects that last about a week."
If it had been a cobra or a diamondback, it would have been a whole other story.

People called Haast and nut, fool, idiot when he began to inject himself with venom. Now he is 95 and in better health then most people I know. There was a need for what Joe did. How many of you knew a hog could do this kind of damage? I know that I didn’t and I appreciate what he has done.

I read that article a long time ago. and that kinda makes me wonder why he let the snake bite him in the firs place.it said that he ran cold water on the snake after 3 to 5 five minutes.hognoses dont have venom glands this new evidence could mean they will evolve into it someday. The reason his arm swelled up so bad was probably and adverse reaction to the saliva in the snakes mouth.Or it could be that he left the snake on his hand fo 5 minutes. who knows?

Hognosed snakes and other opistoglyphs (rear-fanged snakes) most assuredly do have "venom glands" regardless of how little evolved they are. These were once referred to as the Duvorney's gland (my spelling may be off) but I believe Dr. Bryan Fry has coined a new term for it. Though they aren't the advanced glands found in elapids, viperids, or atractispids, they still get the job done.
I always find it curious why such a large portion of the herp community refuses to recognize hognosed snakes as venomous, even though the distinction between venomous and dangerous has been shown to stretch a long way over and over again. Is it because hog breeders are afraid it will hurt their sells if they start correctly labelling the animals? Is it because kids are afraid mommy and daddy won't let them keep them if they know they are venomous? Or is it just some random stubborness that refuses to acknowledge new evidence even when presented it in an extremely scientific fashion (referring to Dr. Fry's work)? I wonder how many people, after the untimely deaths of Schmidt or Mertens, continued to deny that boomslangs or twig snakes were venomous? Afterall, they had been handled for years without incident right? So those two cases were just extremely random and couldn't ever be repeated right? Of course that is wrong. Don't let ego or stubborness blind you to the truth, or even potentially risk your life.

I've got a 6 year old male W hognose - I feed him with forceps just like the front fanged. A feeding response is a feeding response - just because its a "little old harmless hognose" doesn't mean that you can get all comfortable-like. When he's not in the 'eat now' mode, I've taken him to elementary schools for herp education - I think he's probably been held by about 500 schoolkids ... Hmmm maybe he just retired ...
