Where would I be able to purchase a couple of vials(how much would it cost, I've heard $100-200) of rattlesnake anti-venom?
Are they only authorized to medical facilities? I guess "professional purposes"

Most of your Level 1 trauma centers have crofab. The cost is anywhere from 1200- 1600 dollars a vial, and the initial dose for a bite is 4-6 vials just to control the effects. You cant give this stuff by yourself. crofab has to be given IV bolis with Normal saline in a 1000ml bag. Bryan

Also, all of the proper meds and equipment must be at the bedside in case you have an allergic reaction to the anti-venom.

I have a dealer in CA that carries CroFab, $900/vial. That is the best price I have found. They can’t ship it to you. You will have to find a dr in your area willing to buy it for you. Once he has it, can write you a script and then you can keep it. An average envenomation will run 5 vials to begin with, a major will need 10 asap. That is a huge financial investment. Stocking your own AV is the responsible thing to do, must most can’t afford it. Also bear in mind, many attending er docs will not use meds you bring in. it’s a huge liability risk to them. Will help your cause if you have a notarized liability release with you when you check in. if they choose to go ahead and waste their supply rather then use yours, we can’t help that….we have still done the responsible thing. If you need that phone number, contact me off line.

Personally, I wouldn't stock CroFab even if someone would sell it to me. It goes out of date in just 2 years!
Check around at your local hospitals first. Call them and ask to speak to the pharmacy. Tell them your situation and ask them how many vials they keep in stock. My local hospital 8 minutes away only stocks 6, but there's one about 30 minutes away that stocks 30 vials. So I'm going to get the 6 vials, then I'm getting shipped out for the remaining 20 that I'll probably need if I get tagged by an EDB or "the rattlesnake formerly known as canebrake".

The best option is to join the Antivenom Bank forming now. See this website for all of the information: www.neavb.org

David,
You have some very wise input already. I'm only going to add that CroFab (the wonder drug), does have side effects, which only can be seen by the attending Doc in the ER. By far, this is obviously not a financially feasible thing to do. However, like in my case with Gabby's, you can purchase for $70 (USD) 1 10ml ampoule of SAIMR polyvalent. This is a more feasible option, but it only applies obviously to my gabby's. The same wouldn't work for my crotalus. I would be at the mercy of the CroFab dollar grabbers.
While on this subject, perhaps I could get Chris's input here. My ampoules of the SAIMR, a devastating bite on average would run me approximately 4-5 ampoules? Just wanting to check myself here.
Best of luck,
Matt
P.S. If you do keep Gabby's and want to acquire your own supply, simply shoot an email to neo.soul@nhls.ac.za Be prepared with an export cert, but he'll quote you a price (via Pro-Forma invoice) if you have a quantity you're looking for (with freight via DHL).

Matt:
On Venom ER, one South Pac bite that held onto the guys thumb took 58 vials of Crofab to control. It cost the hospital $165,000 in Crofab. As Chris said, it's not the best serum around because it clears your system too fast and has limited reactivity with some species of Crotalids, like Helleri & Molossus.
The Rhino bite in Ohio a few weeks ago took 5 vial of SAVP Poly and was classified as a mild envenomation. Moderate to Severe I would say 10+ may be required. Devastating, "strike & hold" like Gabbys are known for may require 20+. Each bite and the circumstances surrounding it are totally different, always plan for extreame cases. Every time mine feeds I can't but have a worst case senario vision, it's not a pretty one.
Cheers!

The initial dose for a confirmed Gaboon bite with envenomation is 80ml thats for SAIMR or Behringwerke polyspecific. This is recommended for the two major bitis species, B. gabonica and B. arietans.

A serious Puff Adder bite in Tucson, AZ in 1997 required 20 vials.
This was an interesting case in why banning exotics is bad. They are illegal in AZ. I spoke with the physician that treated the patient he told me a scary tail.
The patient would not tell the physician what type of snake he was bitten by even though the doctors felt he was knowlageable about snakes by the conversation. As many of you know there are some common symptoms associated with bites by C. atrox and B. arietans. Well in Tucson the Atrox bites are the most common, so the doctors were going to treat the bite as one. The victim finally told when they were going to start to give him Wyeth Crotalid A/V which obviously would not work. The proper serum was obtained and the patient recovered to a confiscated "HOT" collection and large legal bill to deal with.
Rather than sending keepers underground with their collections and risking death. Lawmakers should set up workable permit systems meeting the needs of both keepers and the community.
