and i would need to spend around $40,000 on antivenom to full protect my life against a bite from one of my adult rattlers......and i know they're native species, but hey, why just go after the guys who keep exotics....it may be just as easy for them to get a/v from miami-dade as it is for me to locate a/v for my native species.....thing about native species is that the supply is tapped into more frequently since the natural bite will occur from time to time.....
so, $40,000 every 3-5 years, i'd need to find out if i'm allergic to a/v to start with, etc.......
as the original question asked, is it realistic?
how many of you who keep antivenom actually keep enough? why is a "starter dose" better than nothing when concerning a lot of species? doesn't it just delay the inevitable? that's not "being responsible", that's being able to say you are to people like me....that's just another way to be better than others.....
and what if i'm bitten by 3 angry crotalus horridus at the same time? should i keep $100,000 worth on hand?
you see, you can't do this without being just as "unsafe" as i am.......we shouldn't put any energy or money into our own a/v stock....we should set up a system that works.....i could come up with a few hundred to support something like this......but since the "full time herpers" have their hands full and the part time guys like myself have kids and real jobs to worry about, it's hard........maybe it's just a fatally flawed hobby that needs to be left alone and taken for what it is, dangerous and unsafe......that's what free climbing is and people do that....i fell 30 feet because of a moss-covered rock when i was 10.....had a friend whose brother died from it.....
some things just aren't safe and should be left alone....just protect people that aren't "participating" and you're doing your job as a lawmaker.....if a guy's gaboon gets out, then there should be REAL consequences that will deter those who aren't into this 100%....hell, kill the guy for all i care, put him to work on a prison farm growing food or cotton or something, use him for lab tests, etc.......

Not Tommy Blake.
Most likely the post was pulled to keep folks from thinking they can order antivenin directly without the required import permits, and to keep folks from loosing their money.
Not very likely that AV without the permits, coming in from Vietnam, would clear US Customs, LOL.
The cobras pickled in rice wine were pretty cool though. Shows folks how venomous snakes are viewed in other countries. Would be kind of cool to own one of those as a conversation piece. Don't think I would want to drink the rice wine though, LOL.
Best Regards

Yeah, you'll never get the AV into the country without permits. The manufacturers require permits before they will even process your order.
In today's world (post 9-11) It is damn near impossible for the average person to acquire AV.

As an exotic venomous keeper, if you are not dedicated enough to spend (or don't have the $) the money or jump through the hoops to obtain your own AV...then you are not dedicated enough to keep the exotics either. It is not that hard to do. If you are bit by an exotic and you are treated w/ someone else's AV, not only are you depleting the other person's supply of AV...but consider this when I was bit by a Monocle Cobra about 8 yrs ago...the hospital charged me about $500/vial, which I received 8 vials. I bought 12 vials last year from Thai Red Cross w/ shipping for around $700! Also as a keeper of Black Mambas, I consider having my own supply of SAIMR a MUST, not something to be considered. Just my 2 cents...

As i was looking before i found this one I hope to help someone.
You can buy it on the official antivenom website (red cross)
http://www.snake-antivenin.com
No difficult process as other places...
But if you know a shop with more species please tell me also.
Thanks.
