Ed, you can not judge if a snake is venomous or not just because you find its behavior to be "mean looking and aggressive."
Try to look at it from the snakes poing of view. You were teasing the snake with a daggar. Now, that poor old Texas Rat Snake did not know what you were, all he knew was that some huge animal hundreds of times larger than him was tormenting him.
Of course, he is going to fight for his life, as he is scared to death! He is going to strike and bite and do his very best to scare you away.
If some huge animal that was 300 feet tall and weighed many hunreds of times what you do started poking at you with a daggar as big as a telephone pole, I bet you would fight for your life also. And you just might bite and try to look aggressive to try to scare the huge animal away.
You seem to have educated yourself enough to be able to recognise Rattlesnakes, Copperheads, Cottonmouths, and Coral Snakes. Now do yourself, your grand kids, and the harmless snakes in your area a favor and buy the Field Guide to the Snakes of Texas, which is published by the University of Texas Press, and is only $13.37. Here is the link:

If you do this, and read the book, you will become far more knowledgable than about 99% of the people in Texas about snakes. You will find out that the snakes do not have "nests,"and you might find out that all the new harmless ground snakes you are now seeing came in with all that dirt you added to your yard when you replaced the septic tank a few years ago.
If you purchase the book, you will be able to help your grandkids grow up with real knowledge, and help them to not repeat the silly fears that way too many people have about snakes.
$13.37 is a very small price to pay for a book that combines the knowledge of two of the most experienced and respected herpetologists in your state.
Hope this helps.
Best Regards JohnZ
