Jared, it is nice to see the snakes win from time to time.
Feral and semi-wild domestic pet cats kill countless songbirds, lizards, and snakes each year.
They have become so bad in places, that some states have open season on shooting cats that do not have a coller around their neck. Even in areas where there are leash laws, folks ignore that for cats.
The house I just moved from has a neighbor with about 10 yard cats, and they were always in my back yard killing birds, snakes, baby rabbits, and lizards.
I had to purchase a paint ball gun to teach the cats that they were not the super predator that they thought they were, and to discourage them from coming into my property, LOL ! I could have easily used sub-sonic 22's, and retired them permanatly, but that would have been a bit mean, and I kind of like cats, even though I do not keep them. You do have to wonder what the neighbors thought when their black and grey cats came home with bright red, green, or orange paint spots though, LOL ?
Best Regards JohnZ

As someone who makes their living in paintball, and has played for two decades, watch such use of a paintball gun. It WILL take an eye out if you hit them in it (this isn't a possibility, it's an absolute) and you WILL be charged with cruelty to animals.
Not to mention that will end up being yet another media-sensationalized story that will hurt ANOTHER hobby I love.

Kerry, the modern paint ball guns are vastly improved from the ancient first generation 30 year old ones I have.
The paint guns I have are so weak that the paint ball will not break open even when it hits a hard object like a wall half the time, LOL. I have better success using the paint balls in a sling shot, and often do just that. I always aim for the back ham of the cat anyway, cau'z like I said, I really dont want to hurt the cats, but to just remind them to be less arrogant, and to let them and the neighbors know their bounderies, LOL.
I also love soaking the cats with a powerfull garden hose when I get the chance, LOL.
I just want to remind the neighbors, and the cats from time to time, that we do have leash laws, and that they are supposed to keep their cats and dogs in their yard (not much of a chance of that when you are dealing with illeterate red neck hicks).
I could have trapped the cats in a havahart trap and called animal control and the folks would have had to bail the cats and dogs out of animal jail if I had wanted to.
And I could have made the cats and dogs permanatly "run away from home."
When you have sleaze bucket neighbors like I used to live next to, it really is amazing I was as nice to their cats and dogs as I was. But it is not the animals fault, as the animals did not pick their owners. After 9 years, I have finally moved from that place, and can say I never killed one of their mangy free-roaming "pets," thought it was tempting at times.
Feral Cats are a real problem, and from an ecological standpoint, it would have been better for the local ecosystem if I had wasted those cats. But I did'nt.
Best Regards JohnZ

Wow John. A coyote ate my cat lol.. I agree that ferels are a pain and a problem . But have you ever tried keeping a cat in a yard or on a leash?? It dont work. They are far too independant.I dont agree with torturing any animal for doing what nature has it do. My kids cat is neutered. I strongly believe in fixxing pets(and people that live off of welfare but thats a different topic). However when my kids old cat became coyote food, I accepted that as a part of nature. We got her a replacement and tried (and tried) to keep it as a house cat. But,, he's a quick lil F&^%*$#^%...
Needless to say he gets out from time to time and there is no keeping him in the yard at that point.

Cats doing what they do natural does to apply to the US. Domesticated house cats under no circumstances should be allowed outside. I have had a cat for 12 years now and never once has he ever killed anything or even got out more then for a few mins and promptly chased down. Fixed or not cats devastate wildlife. Just because you fix a cat doesn't mean that its not out killing countless smaller animals.
If you want to have cats out in the wild then go to Egypt. In my opinion a cat outside in the US should = open season. I know it sounds cruel but it is far more cruel to allow non native predators to have their way with native wildlife.

Thanks Jared. Feral cats suck and if I see another one cruising the pavement in Hyde County I'm aiming my wheels at it. God knows how many herps those (insert explicit word here) kill each year in Hyde alone. Not to mention nationwide. ><

I have a 14+ foot african rock that just loves DOR cats. If you think you have gotten funny looks from passerbys when you were trying to get a snake out of the road, you should see their expression when you jump out and throw a dead cat in the back of your truck.

On a more serious note, the last estimate I saw was that cats catch a million birds (thats 1,000,000) a day just in the US.
