Well, since I don't own any snake, I will have to stage the snake to broom/can until one appears again.
I just feel if I live here it is responsible to own tongs.
And maybe i should rephrase the word tiger 'cage'.
My pet cats really live in huge naturalistic habitats, so it is pot easy to snake proof it or use broom, since it is not smooth concrete surface.
Here is one pic of my tiger 'cage', which clearly shows the BLM owned rocky canyons, which snakes love.

Rexano-
36 inch wall...if you are really paranoid go for a 48 inch wall around each enclosure, bury it 6-12 inches below the surface.
An electric shock collar and about 20 minutes exposure to a rattlesnake should ought to do the trick.. Labs learn in 1 attempt.
If the cats are successfully eating them then a pair of tongs isn't really going to save the ones that you don't 'overdramatically' almost step on.
Rob,
I have to disagree... a pair of snake tongs is really only usefull for picking up tortoise poo... giving people just enough information to get them killed is not a good idea. This is all a video on youtube will do. Sure a 48" tong will work well on a 24 inch C. mitchelli or scutatus...but having someone buy a pair of tongs and decide to give it a go on a 5 foot C. atrox or 9 foot D. polyepis (youtube is available worldwide, keep in mind) and you have a dead person with a pair of tongs in their hands.
Everyone-
Moral of the story, if you want to save a few wild snakes...teach acceptance and understanding. Not removal, capture, restraint or removing them too far from the capture location as that is just as fatal as a garden utensil.... Teaching this sort of thing is not beneficial for snake or person.
If you want to do it, fine. Learn how hard to squeeze the tongs so as not to break bones or kill. Learn how far and what habitat is appropriate to relocate too. Just not on some lame youtube video...
Or learn tolerance and leave them be...
If you are worried about your kids, teach them about the local wildlife, how to avoid dangerous encounters. We teach them how to cross the street safely, we can teach them how to interact with all local wildlife. Be it, Mountain Lion, Bear, Rattlesnake or Bees.
Same goes for your pets, teach them to avoid dangers with local wildlife or keep local wildlife out of their pens/yards. If you are not prepared or capable to do so, than you are not acting as a responsible pet owner.
youtube is a dangerous tool...much like the internet. Anyone becomes an 'expert' Just look at 'muffdaddies' snakebite treatment videos..
Rexano, I've battled you once on here...hopefully you don't take this as another chance to do internet genocide on each other...just take it as a youtube video of this is a bad idea and move on to positive education rather than forceful removal etc..

OK, Lesson in human behavior ;)
Please understand something.
Just like you will not give up your venomous hobby because somebody (AR, parents, friends, wife…) wants you to, because you already made up your mind about being part of this hobby, when people come here for advice they most likely already decided they WILL do it, and they came here for advice on how to do it correctly and will NOT take ‘do NOT do it’ for an answer.
If they get good advice, things might be OK, if they get no advice or condescending treatment, world might end up with more muffdaddies or whatever the YT snake guy’s name was.
If you offer no advice and another muffdaddy is created, then you have no right to whine and moan (like u often do here) when another bad MUFFY video is created, but since most humans’ favorite pastime is complaining, maybe MUFFY serves a purpose here as a target on which to relieve the excess energy;-)
Z
PS: Stopgettinpopped, thanks for the tiger compliment, that is my another project, to do a video about 'backyard pet tigers' as AR call them and how miserable their lives are in captivity being rotten spoiled instead of being killed for parts in the wild

I have to agree with Terry on not showing every joe a set of tongs. Tigress has a very unique case with the large cats. But, most people dont have that to contend with. The first thing to know is that the snake does not want anything to do with humans other than cool concrete slabs ect. If it does not pose a threat, LEAVE IT ALONE it will leave. If there is concern there are usually #s to call for removal. Animal control for example. They will safely remove the animal. Again tigress has a unique case. I for one dont want to get in the pen with a large animal that doesnt know me snake or not.. I dont think its everyones responsibility to own tongs. That is dangerous. Improperly used can danage the snake or get the person bit.Go on YOU-Tube , tell them to Get a phone number for snake removal or emergancies.. Shelby

Ok-fair enough re: human behavior. You are correct about that. However, people would be wise to listen to the advice given when it is asked for? Yourself included.
Two other pieces of advice that I think would benefit you and your chosen cause very well...
1- you have 2 ears and one mouth, use them in that order. (defined...listen first then speak)
2- "It's what you learn AFTER you know it all that counts!"
A lesson on human behaviour for you as well seeing as you did not listen to the other advice just given above and in my previous post...
Humans always think they know it all and you are a top candidate for the most arogant ignorant person I've ever witnessed...
(ignorance is not an insult, just merely stating that you talk about subjects that you have no factual information to back it up with)
I gave you advice above, how to snake proof your enclosures, which by looking at your pictures could very easily be done. It's obvious that you spare no expense on your animals so why would you not make your enclosures safe for your animals? Protect them from the environment you choose for them to live in?
I'm not sure where you get that come here and whine? I post very infrequently and when I do it is usually in regards to some erroneous, passioniate, uninformed potentially dangerous piece of misadvice given by someone... I think you just don't like being told that you are mistaken, wrong or need to learn something...
You need to get a thicker skin if you can't take advice properly placed.
Also, I have been watching some of your youtube videos great way to get and hold peoples attention, bikini's and lions...so I recant here and now that if you would like to jump in another bikini and tong-handle some rattlesnakes...I'm all for it!

I was not referring to just you personally about Muffy whining
What materials do u suggest to use for snake proofing?
The resistance here to teach others how to use tongs would be analogous to resistance to teach public how to do CPR because paramedics do it even better.
Sometimes you can not just leave the snake and wait for it to go away. Once I had huge panamint, easily over 3 feet in front of my garage, I needed to leave, but if I moved the truck snake would be run over and dead.
I had no tongs, just poked him with stick trying to get him move, nothing worked, tongs would have worked if I owned them back then, so I had to wait until it finally got out of the way and I was late.
Glad you enjoy my lion/bikini video.
Actually the video footage I did of another panamint few days ago was done with me wearing bikini, I was holding the camcorder, but trust me, bikinis were present on the scene, so I guess you will watch that snake/tong video when I finish it and recommend to your friends?

Z- As much as you potentially irritate me, I think I would have a great time arguing perspectives over beer rather than over the internet! :)
Anyway, You put me whining and moaning in perenthesis specifically as well...which did kind of rub me wrong but no matter.
"What materials do u suggest to use for snake proofing?"
Personally, I would use HDPE High Density polyethylene 1/2 inch sheets...not cheap nor particularly attractive stuff but would work very nicely for your setup... but plywood would serve the same purpose...
I understand the CPR analogy as when I was certified originally in it our instructor told us in no uncertain terms that if he were in the mall and saw someone drop, needing CPR he would likely pass them up if he did not have the proper equipment... Disease transfer and lawsuits etc... I simply could not do that....
As for your panamint story above...honestly, you just didn't poke properly... a stick would move him, a broom would be better but being a little bit late and having a living snake and a living self is part of the tolerance we must learn when we live in their habitats...I have to wait constantly for Bison herd to cross the highway...not sure I want to try and see if a stick would make one of them move though...\
In your particular instance I would suggest that you find someone local that can show you the ins and outs of snake handling 101... a pair of tongs may very well be a good idea for you seeing as you potentially are willing how to use them properly. Hopefully, learning the dangers of distant relocation of a rattlesnake etc... but for the general public, I don't think this is a wise way to do it...I deal with a quarter million individuals of the "general public species" and trust me they are a different species :) every year. Teaching them about tongs is a bad BAD idea.
And yes, I can guarantee that if you do so choose to do this rattlesnake removal video and there are bikini's involved...I will most certainly, view it...possibly a second time and then maybe give it a show to my friends...
Honestly, I'm glad you are asking questions..but maybe get some more info, experience and advice about how to do this video if thats what you are set on doing. I along with many others in this forum would be happy to help guide you but please oh please don't teach snake removal on the internet... Honestly, I see some very dangerous techniques on the snakegetters website that Karl mentioned earlier. So even, experienced people may not come off properly...

Make that Vodka
<<HDPE High Density polyethylene 1/2 inch sheets...SNIP... but plywood would serve the same purpose... >>
That does sound ugly, plus my guard dogs have fetish to chew anything made of plywood or plastic, even the hard livestock pans...and this woudl only protect the caged animals not the ones roaming 10 acres.
<<I understand the CPR…SNIP... I simply could not do that.... >>
What if the person needing CPR was a girl in thong or bikini?
<<As for your panamint story above...honestly, you just didn't poke properly... >>
Doesn’t that just tell you what a gentle person I am ? I can not even irritate a rattlesnake ;-)
<<And yes, I can guarantee that if you do so choose to do this rattlesnake removal video and there are bikini's involved...I will most certainly, view it...>>
Maybe start a local 'Bikini Snake Removal' business? I mean, we have a wal Mart with parking lot and cars here, I can handle and respond to few fake reports of Fer-de-lance, with or without tongs.
Seriously, when I finish the video I will upload it on REXANO site first with link not public, unless I send somebody the link myself to tell me what they think before I make it public.
