Brandon none of us are against you, we just want to see you do well without putting yourself in undue danger. I really enjoy watching you Videos and do see you possibly being the next Jeff Corwin, Rom Whitiker so on so forth.
If you are interested in getting a Hook, I will give you the layout to making one for yourself. I’ve always took more pride in one I made myself, so if you want I can E-mail you the instructions to make your own “Like I Make Mine”. Its always been fun to me to make my own Herping Tools.
Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

"I'm usually one of the more critical folks of younger people working with hots on this web site....so, most will be surprised when I say this:
I was actually really impressed with this kid. He wasn't a show boat, you could tell he has a real, genuine passion and interest in herps, a decent amount of knowledge and awareness, and my gut feeling tells me that he's the kind of kid that will be open to advice amongst the older set here. There was no heavy metal music in the background, or, ridiculous acts of utter carelessness (other than a few things that John Z mentioned....and maybe having more knowledge about the real potential for harm of things like copperheads - they are definitely not "mildly venomous"). I haven't seen the other videos but I think his heart is in the right place. Obviously, he's a Steve Irwin like protege and I don't mean that in a negative way. With a little shoring up such as using a real snake hook, maybe having a set of tongs nearby, and improving some of his handling skills just a tad, I think he's got a lot of potential. Compared to other similar things I've seen, this was actually one of the better ones - what I liked most is that when you are done watching the video, you have a much greater appreciation for the beauty of that animal - so NICE job.
Okay, enough nice things about young herpers for one day!:-)

LOL.. That does surprise me a good bit Rob.
but, like I've said before, the young vs. old keeper debate is really pointless to debate. It isnt age.
It does not take but 10 or so posts, or a youtube video to me, to determine if the individual is on the right track, or utterly stupid.
And sadly, I feel, like myself, this kid has alot more knowledge at least some BASIC experience, that far surpasses many keepers/handlers out there....
muffdady coming to mind... =(
And, glad to see you here Brandon! Admittedly, I watched many of the videos when this thread first open up myself. Very nice, unscripted, and genuine. And based on your posts, I am quite confident you doing things right, and for the right reasons.
Take Care.
~John.

Lady blood rose....yes, that's a harmless snake in the pic but if you can't develop good habits with harmless species you can and will make the same mistakes with venomous. Off topic, sorry.

Brandon,
When I was younger I used to handle hots the way you do on your video. I'd just use whatever was available to control the snake. And I can honestly say that I have never been bitten by a hot that I was handling. But I can't say that I've never been bitten. I now keep a hook with me just about wherever I go. It looks professional (and looks are, sadly, important), it is easy to carry, and it is a simple way to keep me just a little safer. Think of it as a seat belt. It's not guaranteed to save your life, but it's a simple way to improve your safety. Just think about it.

well my power was out for a few days so i haven't been able to reply
alphadogg yes i do go around looking for fights over the comp, i guess that's just my thing lol, you surprise me with your comments you send me on YouTube. and that you try and say i start fights is kinda funny.
i was banned from the site for not agreeing with some of the mods there and on some sites that's enough, I'm not to worried about not being on that site it was not run very well to begin with.
brandons videos are not to bad, when he gets a hook and is more careful of the handling it will be a great video, i also have nothing against young kids keeping reptiles, hots are little different i don't think a parent should let a minor handle snakes like that for more then a few reasons.
thanks for the backup croc, i have not kept venomous as long as some people here so i would take advise from them if they offered it, some offer it in nicer tone then others lol but as long as the point gets across hurting someones feels shouldn't be a concern.

Reminds me of myself... I think Brandon's video was eschelons above the muffdaddy crap... those guys practice reptile abuse. Brandon obviously has a very real love, enthusiasm and respect for the animals. Just remember, though- you never really know what's going on in those little heads of theirs, and individual snake personalities can differ, so don't tempt fate.
However, Brandon, don't neglect the other aspects of your education if you ever want to be taken seriously (and if you want snakes to be taken seriously) by the larger world of ignorami. Work on your grammar and spelling too! Knowledge is useless without the means of communicating it effectively.
There's a lot more to it than just knowing scientific names but if you do use them in a video, make sure you get it right (for instance, the common snapping turtle is CHELYDRA serpentina!). It also helps to learn the actual meaning of the names (e.g. "serpent turtle"). Also, like many of us, you may find that in 20 years most of the scientific names you are now working so laboriously to memorize will be Elaphe obsoleta!
And if you ever do happen to get bitten by a copperhead, I think you will revise your opinion regarding the "mildness" of their venom. Ionides himself once stated that the worst experience he ever had came from an 8-inch copperhead.
I can't really criticize your use of natural sticks, since I love to explore the woods and swamps whenever, and often find snakes when I'm unprepared for them. In such cases, like John Z, I'll use whatever's handy!
But make it a challenge from now on to catch every racer you see WITHOUT getting bitten. It's great practice (and exercise).
Study hard... when I was 18 I thought I knew everything there was to know about snakes, and how boring is that? I am much more energized and refreshed now by the knowledge that we all have so much more to learn from these amazing animals. Questions can be far more interesting than answers.
I'd be glad to take you herping anytime.

Rob, I see and agree with your point, you definately need to develop good habits, but have to add, I regularly free-handle and do things with non-venomous snakes that I would never consider doing with a venomous snake, including pictures.Thats why I keep some non-vens.You can handle them.Even after a bad bite,(my worse was probably a 14 ft retic) some soap and water, a little betadine, a butterfly bandage or 2,or 4 if nessesary, and 10 minutes later your finishing what you were doing. Can't do that with venomous.
