also, we need to stop it before it happens, because like you said it will become a feeding frenzy, and then it is very hard to stop, because everyone is all fired up, its like trying to tell a 800lb gorilla to calm down if you know what i mean, arin

Let's all make an effort to try to treat folks nice here, and to try to explain to folks why we like them to fill in the profile.
And when we see a thread getting out of control, let's all see what we can do to stop it before it goes too far. Working as a team is the best thing we can do.

For Rob:
"My biggest pet peeve is folks who can't even give a real name but that's just me."
I run my rural computer services business out of my home. If word ever got out of what is in my basement, ninety-nine percent of my business would disappear. My animals ARE legal. That doesn't matter to most people.
Fear. Perhaps irrational fear. Perhaps simple ignorance. Doesn't matter does it?
Did you ever hear of Google?
I tried Googleing (sp?) my posts on this page. Within a couple of hours of making a post, A COUPLE OF HOURS, it came up in a Google search.
Even though I am semi-retired and, frankly, could get along without it, I am not willing to jeopardize my little bit of supplemental income to satisfy your, or anyone else's, curiosity.
I participate on this site because, on rare occasions, my little bit of hard earned experience may prove useful to someone. If because I CHOOSE not to post my real name for important personal reasons and someone discounts my opinions for that reason, that is THEIR problem, not mine.

I think Arin did a great job of finding some of the examples. There are others, I know, and they died a quick death and I really don't have time to find them.
What you need to realize is that, yes, maybe I've asked good questions in the past, but what I'm trying to say is that there are more curious type questions, or simply fun stuff "what-if" questions that many of us have that we feel will get slammed - so nobody ever sees them. Example: Which morphed "super snake" would be the most deadliest: a,b,c,d, or e. The last one I seen like this, 75% of the members thought it was stupid. Hey, we're interested in thoughts, ideas, knowledge of venom, reptiles, death, all that neat stuff! Let's make it more fun. Why not more of those?
As for spelling, my point was simple: If someone is going to get all huffy puffy and know-it-all about a "silly", "kid" question (again, sometimes the fun ones!!), then maybe they shouldn't make mistakes of their own.
Like I said, nobodys perfect. We're not all experts. We like to have fun with "dumb" what-ifs, etc. An example of an intersting post that many find irritating, childish, and just plain dumb: "I am thinking about growing my personal venomous collection to milk and try to sell the venom". I personally like those! I like to hear ideas, criticisms, experiences, and see constructive questions back to the poster. Not "don't answer this kid", or "what are you an idiot?", or "this guy shows his immaturity doesn't he?"
LET'S ALL HAVE FUN. Hobbies are supposed to be fun, no? For those that make it their career and take it seriously: if it's not also fun, I don't envy your life and career choice.
Look, I love (LOVE) this forum. I want it to be enjoyable and comfortable. One day, if I'm bored and in the mood, I want to ask "If you took the largest, deadliest Black Mamba and the largest, deadliest King Cobra, and forced them to duke it out in a pit built for cockfighting, which would come out alive?" And not be kicked in the onions for it, or be judged childish.
That's all. Remember, the subject of this post says: "Lets ease up a bit". That's it. Just a bit.

Craig, please do not ask those questions here. Humor is one thing, however, questions that can not be answered serve no purpose on a Educational site, and will only stir things up, confuse people, and cause a lot of criticism toward you.
Both of those questions have been asked here before, perhaps by you ? Both of those questions can not be answered, and will not be dealt with here again.
We will not deal with hypotheitcal questions about a cage fight between a King Cobra and a Mamba. And we will not deal with hypotheitcal questions about super morph venomous snakes that do not exsist.
If you want to ask questions like that, take them somewhere else. If you want to ask intelligent questions here, about actual animals and actual situations, you are more than welcome to do that.

I know I've asked dumb questions in the past, maybe not on here lol but to people that i sought to learn from. An ya know I aint afraid to admit that every so often I have a "blonde moment" (thankfuly i'm a natural blonde so its never to bad haha), an a dumb question pops outa my mouth or in this instance from my fingers lol. Alota times I already know the answer, I just forget lol. Lord knows theres been some questions I've asked Chuck, that 5 min later I'm smackin my own forehead goin "DOH! I knew that!".
It seems a trend on alota sites not this one nessicarly for the exprenced to jump on the newbie. An I hae to admit that I've seen less an less of it, even the profile thing has gotten alot better :).
It is kinda disheartening when I get a message from someone who has a strong intrest in keeping venomous snakes, an they tell me "no one would answer my questions", or they feel to ashamed to ask because they don't want to get jumped on. I've directed poeple here before an been told that they don't want to post because of some of whatthey have seen. I always tell them, some of yall may be alil rough around the edges but your hearts are in the right place.
though ya know here lately seems to have been alota new faces popin up which i think is a verry good thing :)

Folks, young and old, have been jumped on at times on this forum but in my opinion, some of them were justified and warranted. Some folks just come here looking for trouble and its very easy to see the true intention of the question being asked. If folks with little to no experience come here in a respectful manner and use some basic common sense in how to ask a question (even if its a question we've answered over and over) in a respectful way, you won't get jumped on. Could be bad parenting, or, just not being taught simple people skills but there's a right way and a wrong way to ask a question and when you come to a site like this with some very well respected people in the venomous community, you need to carefully think how a question may be interpreted because you will get a very direct answer (me included). Sure, this is a hobby to some here, and, in my case, a profession (and passion) and one we all should take very, very seriously. That doesn't mean we can't have fun, but this isn't a "leopard gecko or ball python" forum where we parade around with portraits of themselves and their little "fluffies". This is serious stuff and I think we are oftentimes far too lax in how we approach this hobby. You can get bit by a ball python and we can all get a laugh out of that, you get bit by a venomous herp, and it's not only the next day's headlines, but can also spell someone's life.

Well, here I am again, late to the party. Sorry folks, hope I get a better internet solution soon! I just relocated even farther out in the boonies than I was, and there's still no DSL out here, only "rile-up," and I don't want to shorten my life-span by going that stressful route. The good news is that there are a lot more rattlesnakes here than where I was, so with that in mind, who needs DSL?
First of all, I do think we should all lighten up on Craig... poor guy has to live in Hawaii. A paradise to most people, but a hell-on-earth to snake lovers! I visited there once on the way back from Australia... oh, what a pain to see such a wonderful place for snakes that has absolutetly none. It really is pitiful. I did run up on a huge moray eel snorkeling off Diamond Head though. Craig, how you can stand it is beyond me. I'd head for the Phillipines or somewhere. And though hypothetical questions aren't beloved by me either, I'm more than willing to cut you some slack since hypothetical snakes are all there are in Hawaii and I would be bored out of my mind.
I believe that the first question I ever posted here was answered by a lot of "that has already been dealt with endlessly in other threads (you idiot)" which made me feel like, well, an idiot. However, I would like to point out that my ignorance about this wasn't due to the fact that I was lazy, but more because I was (and still am to a degree) a Luddite (partially willful) and was unfamiliar with forums and how they work.
I had used email and my own business website for many years, and hardly ever looked at anything else on the web, since that was all I needed at the time. I was totally unfamiliar with forums, blogs, etc. and had never participated in one until I came here. My original attraction to the site was the classifieds, but I gradually started checking out the other stuff and, heck, I've learned more about using the internet from this site than anywhere, so thanks! I still stubbornly refuse to abandon the use of punctuation, and I haven't quite warmed to the shorthand (OMG, LOL) stuff either, but hey, it takes all kinds.
Finally, the thread that everyone has been referring to that caused such consternation in the ranks began with the question: "which is better for a beginner - a gaboon or a rhino?"
Sorry, but I still think this was (is) a stupid question. As I pointed out (but not harshly at all), these snakes simply do not belong in the same sentence with the word "beginner." In fact, no venomous snake does. My standard response to the question of "which venomous snake is best for a beginner" is "a water snake, coachwhip, racer or Amazon tree boa." Or if you want to keep gaboons and rhinos someday, start with blood pythons. Anyway, that word "beginner" is what set off alarm bells, and rightfully so. My own, personal feeling is that ten years minimum active and hands-on study of reptiles - all kinds of reptiles - with ample opportunities to be around and observe experienced people working with venomous snakes, is required before one begins keeping venomous snakes themselves. If you started keeping (and studying) snakes when you were 6, then you could well be there when you're 16. It's about establishing a depth of commitment... do you really want to be involved with reptiles for the rest of your life, because if you're keeping venomous snakes that might just be how it works out. If it's just a phase you're going through, then you're better off enjoying venomous snakes vicariously, by reading about and observing them, and leave the keeping/handling of them to the "lifers." Only you can know for sure.
I think we all want to encourage responsible young people who have a sincere interest in this work (I still refrain from using the word "hobby".... it just doesn't sound right to me), but we definitely do not want to encourage anyone into an early grave, or into generating any more bad press than we already endure.
I just did not see this right off as being a hypothetical question... that would have been phrased more along the lines of "Which snake, a gaboon or rhino, is more difficult to keep?" The implication I got from it was, "Hey, I'm a beginner with 200 bucks burning a hole in my pocket and I want to know whether I should get a Gaboon or a Rhino."
I'm not in the least territorial about this field... I sincerely wish there were more people who shared my interest, as I often feel like a pariah as soon as I leave this site and go back out to face the "real" world of snake-hating "normal" people. So I'm all in favor of developing new, young herpers... I just want them to stick around long enough to become old herpers someday.

I have seen some people roughed up bit for asking certain questions here but nothing compared to some other forums I have briefly broused through. This is a great site and is easily my favorite. I find myself brousing through it 2-3 times a day if I have nothing better to do. There is a wealth of knowledge and expertise here that can't be matched by any forum I have come across. But I also agree that we could be a little kinder at times on how we answer beginners who have a real desire to learn about our hobby. But for the most part the majority of questions are answered tactfully.

I mostly lurk here and coment verey little but this time I will give it a go. I was in the Navy. Shipbord fire fighting is intensley tought (or was when I was there) and since I and the group I hung with was headed to a Sea Bee Battlion we did not take it verry sreiously. Well one day when we were in the boat mock up and "fighting" fire fueled by a puddle of diesel we decided not to ware our PPe because it was to hot. While we did our minemum our instructor cut our hose and closed and dogged the hatch. He then got on the IC and proceded to describe the letters our wives and parents would get telling how we bravely died for our ship mates and country. That had an impact om my young mushey mind, As well as a verey good friend of mine who was infact on the USS Cole when it was almost blown in half. He was a PO-1 incharge of a d&c crew. Had he screwed up that boat would have been on the bottom of the harbor. The lerning curve for this hobby (obsession?) like my past job is verry steep. You dont get maney second chances. you get bit or you dont. In my feeble mind, a brused ego is the best way to lurn compared to a lond painful (deadly) expencive trip to the hospital, Not to mention the attention it brings on not just Hot reptile keepers, but those who keep exotic pets as a whole. So I saw dog a fellow who admits a screw up but not in such a way that will keep them from coming back but definatly enough to shake them up and leave a foot pront on that ego. Sorey for the long winded post and horrible spelling. I am lost with out spell check.
